Lousada UFO Sighting: The Lights Over the Vale de Sousa, Portugal (11 August 2026)

Lousada, Vale de Sousa, Porto District, Portugal  ·  11 August 2026  ·  Eyewitness Footage · Portugal

A frame from the witness's own footage, filmed on a Samsung S24 Ultra from a balcony above Lousada at about one in the morning on 11 August 2026. The objects appear only as faint, unresolved points of light against a black sky, with the lights of the Vale de Sousa below the horizon line. No structure or shape is resolvable in any frame, and the cylinder recorded on the report form reflects the witness's naked-eye impression rather than anything visible in the video. (Witness footage filed as report 12791 at ufosighting.report and relayed to r/UFOs)

At one in the morning on 11 August 2026, a resident of Lousada in the Vale de Sousa, east of Porto, reported three stationary points of light forming a triangle low in the northeastern sky. He watched them for two hours, filmed three minutes of footage on a Samsung S24 Ultra, and checked flight and satellite trackers before saying anything. Then he filed a report and asked publicly for an explanation. Nobody has offered him one.

What did witnesses see at Lousada?

The witness gives the time as 01:00 WEST on 11 August 2026 and the place as postal code 4620-663 in Lousada, at 41.2737 north, 8.2817 west, facing northeast. He logged four objects, a duration of two hours, two witnesses and a Samsung S24 Ultra as the camera, calling the shape cylindrical, the height as high as a plane, and the movement hovering, then straight and steady. He reported no wings, no rotors, no exhaust plume and no noise.

His own account is the heart of the case. He wrote that in the northern part of the country, specifically the Vale de Sousa area of Lousada, Paredes and Penafiel, he observed three stationary points of light in the sky. They were constantly changing colour and shining brightly, appearing to form a triangle. Since he did not have a 360 degree view of the sky, these were the only three he noticed forming that shape. At one point another light appeared, relatively closer, rotating as it moved toward those three lights. He managed to film it rotating and passing very close to one of the stationary lights, and that stationary light was flashing irregularly, sometimes showing one red and one yellow or white light, and other times showing one red followed by two yellow or white lights. He checked whether it was an aeroplane or a satellite, but neither of the sites he used showed any planes or satellites in that area at that time. He asked whether there was any explanation, adding that he had seen similar things over the past year, but that this time he decided to film it to see if he could find one.

The archive downloaded the original file and inspected it frame by frame: 1280 by 720, HEVC, 201.34 seconds, 206 MB, so he filmed just over three minutes of a two hour sighting. It is very dark, handheld and heavily shaken, and some frames show apartment blocks, a balcony parapet and a town across a hillside below. The objects appear only as faint points of light, with no structure and no resolvable shape, so nothing in the video supports the cylinder on the form. One point is distinctly red across several frames, and at about 88 seconds one is distinctly green. One passage is a smear of parallel streaks from camera shake, an artefact that cannot be read as motion.

What is the official explanation?

There is no official narrative here, and that is the state of the record rather than a gap in the research. No Portuguese aviation authority, police force, civil protection body or branch of the armed forces has commented, and there is no case number, no investigation and no denial. A search of Portuguese-language sources produced no corroboration at all.

The only computed context comes from the reporting platform, which attached a satellite pass list: FREGAT DEB at 49 degrees above the northeast between 00:06 and 00:09 UTC, and SL-16 R/B at 16 degrees above the northeast at 00:06 UTC. Both are orbital debris, a Fregat upper-stage fragment and an SL-16 rocket body, and both were in the northeast, exactly where the witness was looking. That coincidence is worth stating, and so is its limit: each was a single pass of a few minutes, and nothing in orbit hovers for two hours.

The archive ran its own checks instead. Planetary positions from JPL Horizons for the exact site and time give a clean negative: at 01:00 local, Jupiter stood 30 degrees below the horizon and Mars 14 degrees below it, while Saturn was well up but in the east-southeast. No planet was above the horizon in the northeast during the observation window. The aviation check could not be completed to the same standard, because ADS-B Exchange historical playback cannot be read by direct fetching and its public history endpoints returned 404, so no flight track for the airspace east of Porto could be reproduced. The published aeronautical information for Porto Francisco Sa Carneiro, about 35 km west of Lousada, does confirm RNAV arrivals into both runways and a holding pattern at ADNOV, so vectored and holding traffic are normal there, but whether any aircraft was overhead that night is not established.

What did the witnesses think it was?

The reporter filed through the structured form at ufosighting.report, generating case 12791, and the report was relayed to r/UFOs by u/ufosightingsbot on his behalf on 11 August 2026 at 14:17:28 UTC. He then confirmed the submission from his own Reddit account, u/pauIetansp, through a one-time verification link, so the report and the Reddit identity are tied together rather than being an anonymous drop. The archive tried to read the full report page and received an HTTP 403, so it could not be examined beyond the fields in the relayed submission, though the original video was downloaded in full.

What stands out is that this witness did the responsible thing before claiming anything. Asked why the objects could not have been a common object, he answered that he checked various websites that track both planes and satellites to see if they were either, and that neither was passing through that area at that time. That is the one claim the archive cannot reproduce, because he did not name the tracking sites or capture a screenshot, and consumer trackers vary widely in their coverage of low-altitude and non-transponding traffic. His reasoning is reported here as his, and it is not independently verified. He did not claim a 360 degree view, he did not claim the objects were extraterrestrial, and he filmed one specifically in order to find an explanation.

The Reddit thread brought one substantive objection. The commenter u/MotownGreek wrote: "Red and white anti-collision lights is inidicative of this just being a drone." The spelling is the commenter's own. It is a fair observation about the colours the witness himself reported, though it is an assertion rather than an analysis of the footage, and it does not address the two hour duration.

Is the Lousada UFO Sighting: The Lights Over the Vale de Sousa, Portugal (11 August 2026) real? The two-pass assessment

Pass one, how this could be entirely ordinary. The strongest candidate is aircraft lighting. One light showing red with a yellow or white light, and at other times red followed by two yellow or white lights, flashing irregularly, is close to a textbook account of navigation and anti-collision lighting: a red port light, a green starboard light, white strobes and a beacon. The archive's frame inspection supports that reading, because the footage holds a recurring red point and, at about 88 seconds, a distinctly green one. Lousada sits about 35 km east of Porto Francisco Sa Carneiro, whose procedures include RNAV arrivals to both runways and a hold at ADNOV. The two hour duration defeats any single aircraft, though a succession of them could. Without the ADS-B history this stays strong but unproven.

Stars are the second serious candidate and fit the stationary triangle best. Three fixed points holding position for two hours while constantly changing colour is close to a description of bright stars low in the sky, where scintillation makes them flash red, white and blue-white in a way that startles anyone who has never watched one near the horizon. The northeastern sky at that hour in August from 41 degrees north holds Perseus, Cassiopeia and the rising Auriga, including Capella, a notorious producer of that effect. The archive could not obtain a per-star altitude and azimuth for this exact moment, so that is reasoning about geometry rather than measurement. What is measured is that the Summer Triangle, the shape people reach for first, was high in the south and southwest, not in the northeast.

The Perseids are context rather than a candidate. The American Meteor Society gives the 2026 shower as peaking on 12 to 13 August, with a radiant at right ascension 03h12m, declination plus 58.1 degrees, and a new moon on 12 August. The date falls inside the peak window and the radiant sits in the northeast, where the witness was looking, but meteors last a second or two and do not hover. Satellites and debris fail the same way, because a pass is not a hover. Drones fit the fourth light, described as rotating and closing on the others, but not three lights holding position for two hours.

Pass two, what resists the ordinary explanations. Honestly, not a great deal. The residual is the combination rather than any single element: three lights holding fixed positions in a triangle for two hours, and a fourth that approached and passed close to one of them. If the three were stars, the fourth was probably an aircraft or a drone crossing in front of them, and the case dissolves. Nobody has demonstrated that, and nobody has demonstrated the alternative. The tier is therefore Unknown: no official body has said anything, and a disputed tier would require a named, evidenced identification of these specific lights, which does not exist. This is a fresh single-witness report from a careful observer who checked what he could before he spoke, and it is filed as exactly that.
