The Silent White Sphere Over Montreal (26 July 2026)
A man lying in a hammock in Montreal at seven minutes past one in the morning caught a brilliant white light in the corner of his eye, watched it turn back on itself, and only started filming once the turn was over. Fourteen seconds of video survive. They show a bright point of light and nothing else.
What did witnesses see at Montreal?
At 1:08 a.m. EDT on Sunday 26 July 2026 a Montreal resident lying in a hammock caught a light in the corner of his eye, in the southern sky. He filed a structured report at ufosighting.report, published as sighting 12672, and u/ufosightingsbot relayed it to r/UFOs the same day at 17:21:08 UTC as post 1v7a28k. The reporter, u/azxzero, confirmed the filing from his own Reddit account.
His account, quoted exactly as filed including its typing errors: "I was in my hammock in Montreal looking at my ipad and in my peripheral vision, the sky South of my location in the South West part of the city. I was watching the latest veritasium video when an annoyingly bright object entered my peripheral vision. I first thought it was a plane, but it had no green and red lights and was way too bright. Bright white light moving intentionally and with grace in unconventional ways. It did some kind of U-turn oddly gracefully for the speed it was going, then it proceeded to fly towards the North. I was so ine awe of what I was seeing that it took me a good 10 seconds before I start filming it. At that point it's only going in a straight line and it looks like a sphere on video but I think it was triangular."
The form records one object, shape sphere, distance as high as a plane, apparent size a dime at arm's length, duration 20 seconds, one witness, filmed on a Samsung Galaxy S21. Noise is marked NO, and sudden extreme acceleration, extreme speed with no signatures and hard to observe clearly are marked yes. The location field reads only "Canada", though the report's own sky calculations use 45.500 N, 73.600 W.
The archive downloaded the video and inspected it frame by frame: 1920 by 1080, 14.34 seconds, 9.2 MB. What is visible is a single bright white point of light against a dark blue grey sky. It is a point source, with no resolvable structure, no disc, no sphere, no triangle, no edges and no coloured navigation lights. It tracks steadily across the frame, the camera then swings away, and the last third of the clip shows only foliage.
What is the official explanation?
No official body has addressed this event, and in Canada that is normal rather than suspicious. The Government of Canada's Office of the Chief Science Advisor found, in its June 2025 Sky Canada Project report, that "There is no official, accessible platform for Canadians to report UAP sightings, obtain potential explanations or review reliable information about UAPs", and recommended that a federal department be made responsible for public UAP data. None has been. That is why this record lives on a civilian intake form and a subreddit.
The form computed its own sky context, which is part of the record: "Satellites overhead at that time: SL-12 R/B(2) (51 degrees above NNE at 05:11 UTC); SL-3 R/B (48 above SE at 04:59 UTC); HELIOS 1B (43 above N at 04:53 UTC); SL-8 R/B (36 above WNW at 05:17 UTC); SL-8 R/B (33 above WSW at 05:20 UTC); SL-16 R/B (28 above WNW at 05:23 UTC). Computed from orbital data, 2026-07-26 catalog." The sighting minute, 05:08 UTC, sits inside that bracket. Those are rocket upper stages and one French reconnaissance satellite, and the archive could not independently verify the elevations.
Two enquiries failed and are reported as failures. The ufosighting.report page sits behind a Cloudflare bot challenge and returned HTTP 403 to every attempt, so its existence and 26 July 2026 modification date were confirmed instead from the site's own live sitemap. ADS-B Exchange historical playback for that minute was equally unreachable, its trace files returning 403 to non browser clients, so the archive has no aircraft by aircraft picture and will not invent one. On record: Montreal Trudeau restricts aircraft over 45,000 kilograms, take offs between midnight and 7 a.m. and landings between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m., with exemptions granted in practice, while lighter aircraft and general aviation out of Saint Hubert fly around the clock.
What did the witnesses think it was?
His reasoning for rejecting the ordinary candidates deserves quoting in full: "Too fast and silent and graceful. I've seen hundreds of planes and helicopters fly that corridor, but none of them made a U-turn and none of them looked like this. They usually blink and you can see either the red or green or both. But this was solid white and extremely bright. It wasn't a satellite because it was flying too low. It was way faster than a drone and silent. I have a video of the end of my sighting." He claims no expertise, only familiarity with a piece of sky over the city he lives in.
He also corrects himself in the same breath. The title says sphere, the form field says sphere, and then he writes that it "looks like a sphere on video but I think it was triangular". That is an honest witness refusing to let the record overstate him, and a real problem for any shape claim. Frame inspection resolves it in neither direction: what is on the video is an unresolved point of light, which is what a bright point source does on a phone sensor at night when it blooms into a round blob. u/croninsiglos had it right: "I'm not sure that there's real evidence that the object was a sphere."
The other objections were substantive. u/b407driver wrote: "I don't see anything unconventional about its track/movement. Looks like a bright satellite to me. 'Flying too low'? How do you assess that? A satellite over the horizon can be 1500 km away or more." u/suchloc offered "ISS Most probably", and u/sludgefriend allowed it "really could be a satellite, too".
One comment reads like corroboration and is not. u/Comet-vomit666 wrote: "I live near Kingston and we seen somthing similar last week." That is an undated, unevidenced recollection of a different sighting some 290 kilometres away in a different week. Searches of Reddit, X, YouTube and Quebec news in English and French found no second witness, and the Association Quebecoise d'Ufologie, actively publishing 2026 reports, carries nothing for 26 July or for Montreal that month. When a luminous spiral crossed southern Quebec on 12 August 2025 it drew CBC coverage within a day. Nothing of that kind happened here.
Is the Silent White Sphere Over Montreal (26 July 2026) real? The two-pass assessment
Pass one, and the ISS claim first because it was the loudest in the thread. The Space Station fits the witness's own reasons for excluding an aircraft: brilliant, solid white, no coloured navigation lights, silent. It is also testable. The US Naval Observatory gives the solar declination on 26 July 2026 as plus 19.32 degrees and solar upper transit at Montreal at 13:01 EDT, so local solar midnight fell near 01:01 EDT and the sighting came about seven minutes after the darkest moment of the night. At lower transit the sun's altitude is latitude plus declination minus ninety, which at 45.50 N puts the sun 25.2 degrees below the horizon. Earth's shadow at that depression reaches roughly 670 kilometres overhead, the shadow height being the Earth's radius times the secant of the depression angle minus one. The Station orbits at about 415 kilometres, so overhead Montreal it sat some 255 kilometres inside Earth's shadow and was invisible. Working the geometry outward, an object at that altitude could only still be sunlit toward the north and no higher than about 34 degrees. This object was first seen in the south and southwest and flew north, into sky that was in shadow at Station altitude. No historical pass prediction could be obtained for a date already past, because the public predictors reachable to the archive publish forward passes only or require an API key. The geometry does not need one. The ISS is out.
A bright satellite in general survives the same test, because anything above roughly 670 kilometres was still sunlit, and the objects the form named are that population. CelesTrak's public catalogue puts on orbit objects carrying those designations at median altitudes of about 832 kilometres for SL-16 R/B, 805 for SL-3 R/B and 954 for SL-8 R/B, with SL-12 R/B stages far higher. Soviet era upper stages at those altitudes are the commonest cause of naked eye reports of a silent white light crossing the sky, they often run south to north, and several were above the horizon within a quarter hour either side. The filmed fourteen seconds are fully consistent with one, and u/b407driver was right that "flying too low" cannot be assessed: at night, with no reference object, there is no judging the range of an unresolved light.
Aircraft are weaker but alive. A landing light aimed at an observer reads as one intense white source with the position lights lost in its glare, though the hour falls inside the heavy jet restriction window and an approach light does not turn back on itself. A drone is rejected on speed and silence, both hard to judge at unknown range. As context only, the Moon stood 7.07 degrees up at azimuth 216.6 degrees, low in the south southwest and about ninety percent lit, in roughly the quarter of sky he was watching.
Pass two reduces to one thing. Every candidate above explains a bright white light travelling in a straight line, and none explains a U-turn. Here is what the archive will not smooth over: by the witness's own account the turn happened in the ten seconds before he started recording, and the filmed portion is, in his words, "only going in a straight line". Frame inspection confirms exactly that. The most anomalous element of this report exists only as unfilmed testimony, and the video, the only physical evidence, corroborates that something bright and white crossed the Montreal sky and nothing more. That is not an accusation. Peripheral vision, no fixed reference frame and a body in a swinging hammock are poor conditions for judging the curvature of a track, and he says as much by admitting he lost ten seconds to astonishment. No official body has addressed the event, none exists in Canada to do so, no second witness has been found, and no named analyst has produced an evidenced identification of this object. Ruling a candidate out is not the same as confirming one. The tier is Unknown.
