The Formation of Lights Behind Cloud Over San Jose, California (21 August 2026)
On the night of Friday 21 August 2026, three people in a residential part of San Jose, California watched what they described as a flashing light sitting behind a cloud, which at intervals appeared to put out further lights behind other clouds nearby. This case file covers what witnesses reported, the official narrative, and a two-pass assessment with its evidence tier.
What did witnesses see at San Jose?
On the night of Friday 21 August 2026, three people in a residential part of San Jose, California watched what they described as a flashing light sitting behind a cloud, which at intervals appeared to put out further lights behind other clouds nearby. The sighting is given as beginning at 10:05 PM Pacific Daylight Time and running about twenty minutes, until roughly 10:30. The witness who filed the report was facing west. She first saw it from the front yard, went indoors, then came out to the back yard a few minutes later and watched the rest of it.
Her description of the behaviour is specific and is worth quoting rather than paraphrasing. She reported small circular lights arranged in the shape of a circle, "widening and narrowing the occupied space, all at the same distance from one another", and said the lights would move back to what she called the initial main "ship". Eventually, she wrote, the "ship" turned off its light and she went inside. The report lists one object, gives its shape as circle, triangle, light and formation, puts its closest distance at "as high as a plane", and records the apparent size as larger than a coin held at arm's length. No noise and no exhaust plume were reported. The footage was taken on an iPhone 12.
Two video files were filed with the report. This archive downloaded both originals rather than the Reddit re-encodes. They run 12.8 seconds and 17.0 seconds, both 1920 by 1080 with audio. What they show is a heavily dappled, brightly lit cloud layer of the rippled kind, crossed by overhead power lines, with a bright compact source visible in the first clip above a neighbouring roofline. The second clip also captures a bright lamp at a roofline at the bottom of frame, throwing a long straight shaft of glare up across the sky.

What is the official explanation?
There is no official narrative attached to this sighting and nothing in this case rests on one. No agency has commented, and no Federal Aviation Administration, National Weather Service or local law enforcement statement has been identified.
The report was not filed with a government body. It was filed through the structured public reporting form at ufosighting.report and relayed to the r/UFOs community by that service's posting account. Whether a parallel National UFO Reporting Center entry exists could not be established: nuforc.org answers automated retrieval with a Cloudflare interstitial rather than page content, so this archive records a missing NUFORC number as unconfirmed rather than as proven absent.
The one piece of genuinely official data that bears on the case is meteorological. The Iowa Environmental Mesonet archive of observed METAR for San Jose International Airport, about six kilometres north west of the residential districts of the city, brackets the sighting closely. At 20:53 PDT the airport reported few cloud at 7,000 feet and few at 15,000 feet with ten statute miles visibility. At 21:53 and again at 22:53, either side of the reported 22:05 start, it reported few cloud at 15,000 feet and ten statute miles visibility. Surface wind was from around 340 degrees at 8 to 11 knots throughout.
What did the witnesses think it was?
The reporter posts as u/poppyflower7 and her identity as the submitter is verified in the weak but real sense that matters here: the report was filed on the structured form, and she confirmed the submission from her own Reddit account through a one time link, so the account and the filing are tied together. Three witnesses are recorded. She is not anonymous and she did not overstate what she saw.
The most useful thing she wrote is the part that argues against her own case. Asked why the sighting was not a common object, she answered that she had speculated it might have been a spotlight search, and gave two reasons she was not satisfied by that: there were three points of a triangular shape that were blinking, and she could not find a source on the ground. She also wrote that the object "was conveniently alighted with the moon, and was similar in size". A witness who volunteers the prosaic explanation she considered, and says why she set it aside, is giving better evidence than one who does not.
The thread pushed back immediately and in one direction. Two commenters said the same thing independently. One wrote that it was "definitely just lights from the ground (like spotlights) illuminating the clouds". The other made the sharper version of the argument: when you only see the clouds illuminate and nothing in the gaps between them, the source is on the ground, because an airborne light would be visible where there is no cloud to catch it. That is a real test and it is the right test to apply here.
Is the Formation of Lights Behind Cloud Over San Jose, California (21 August 2026) real? The two-pass assessment
Pass one, how could this be mundane. The ground light hypothesis is the obvious candidate, it is what the witness herself considered first, and it is what the thread settled on within hours. The archive can add three measurements the thread did not have, and they do not all point the same way.
First, the sky. The witness describes lights behind cloud, and there genuinely was cloud: the airport reported few cloud at 15,000 feet at 21:53 and 22:53, bracketing the sighting. The footage confirms it and shows the type, a rippled dappled layer consistent with altocumulus at that height. But this is the detail that complicates the searchlight reading rather than supporting it. There was no low overcast. Visibility was ten statute miles and the only layer present during the sighting was thin and high. Searchlights and sky trackers paint low cloud; a sparse layer at 15,000 feet is a poor screen. So the cloud is real, the witness is accurate about it, and it is higher and thinner than the ground light explanation would prefer.
Second, the moon. It was up and it was bright. Computed for the site and minute, the moon stood 20.9 degrees above the horizon at azimuth 202 degrees, south south west, and was 69 per cent illuminated at 22:05, dropping to 18.8 degrees by 22:30. The routine used was validated against controls before being trusted, returning 176 degrees elongation and 99.9 per cent illumination for the full moon of 28 August 2026 and 3.4 degrees and 0.1 per cent for the new moon of 12 August. The bright compact source in the first clip, sitting above a roofline with a cross shaped flare around it, is consistent with the moon in both altitude and appearance. Her own note that the thing was aligned with the moon and similar in size is therefore doing more work than she may have realised. It also sits awkwardly with her stated facing of west, since the moon was some 68 degrees round to her left, though a self reported compass direction is a coarse instrument and this archive does not treat the discrepancy as decisive either way.
Third, the camera. The second clip contains a bright lamp at a neighbouring roofline and it throws a long straight shaft of glare across the frame. This matters because it demonstrates, inside the witness's own footage, that this camera produces prominent linear flare from a bright point source. A camera that flares like that in a scene containing the moon and at least one bright lamp is capable of generating apparent lights that are not in the sky.
One further observation is recorded here because it was examined and not settled, and the honest thing is to say so. In the first clip a small compact cyan wedge with a hard edge appears offset from the bright source, in a saturated colour quite unlike the warm white of the source itself. That is the appearance of an internal lens reflection. Two attempts to demonstrate it failed to settle the question. A collinearity test, checking whether the feature sits opposite the source through the optical axis as a single reflection should, returned a residual of 147 degrees, but that test assumes the frame centre is the optical axis, and iPhone video stabilisation crops and shifts frames, so the assumption does not hold and the result does not refute anything. A frame by frame motion test, comparing how the feature and the source moved as the camera panned, lost lock on both within about a second and a half of jerky handheld motion and returned mixed results. So the feature looks characteristic of a lens artifact and has not been shown to be one. It is logged as an open question rather than an answer.
What survives all of this is that the specific behaviour the witness described, a ring of equidistant small lights that widens and narrows and returns to a central source, is not visible in the two clips she filed. The clips show lit cloud, a bright source, and a lamp. Whether that is because the striking part of a twenty minute sighting was not the part she captured, or because the ring was never in the sky in the first place, cannot be decided from this material.
Pass two, if it is not any of the above. Three people watched something for twenty minutes that behaved, in the witness's account, like a single source deploying and recovering satellite lights in a geometric arrangement. That description recurs often enough in this archive to be worth recording accurately even when the accompanying footage does not carry it. No official narrative exists, the prosaic candidates are strong but none of them has been demonstrated, and the case is therefore tiered Unknown. It should be revisited if a second witness or a wider angle appears.
