A Small Bright Object Filmed over Attleboro, Massachusetts
A clear daytime sky, a genuinely present object, and three different timestamps for when it happened.
What did witnesses see at Attleboro?
A walker in southeastern Massachusetts filmed a small bright object high in a clear daytime sky in October 2026. The recording runs twelve point nine seconds, the witness says they had already been watching the object for about five minutes before it occurred to them to film it, and the clip opens on a residential street with a red maple in full autumn colour before panning up to blue sky crossed by power lines and thin cirrus.
The report was filed through ufosighting.report and relayed to r/UFOs by that site's bot, with the submitter's Reddit account verified through a one time link. The structured fields record one object, described as a sphere, at an apparent size of a pinhead at arm's length and a distance given as as high as a plane, moving randomly and smoothly and seeming to change direction, observed facing southeast for five minutes by a single witness, captured on an Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max. Under the heading asking why it was not a common object the reporter wrote that there was no plane on FlightRadar24 and that it was extremely high in the sky. Their own account is more cautious than the headline the filing generated: "I watched this for about five minutes while on my walk before it occurred to me that I should take a video. I thought it was a very small plane or a metallic balloon."
The object itself is real and small. Measured against a blurred background across seventy eight samples it stands a mean 83 grey levels above the local sky, peaking at 138, so it is well clear of any noise floor and is not a compression artifact or a sensor mark. It is also tiny, a few pixels across in a 720 by 1280 frame, and it carries no resolvable shape. Several automated attempts to isolate and enlarge it on the circulating Reddit re encode returned sunlit gaps between conifer needles instead of the object, which is a fair summary of how little the available copy holds, and no enlargement is published here because none could be verified as showing the object rather than foliage.
The reported motion cannot be confirmed in either direction, and the numbers say so loudly. A straight line fit to the object's position across the clip leaves residuals of 201 pixels in x and 130 in y against net travel of only 336 and 270 pixels. Residuals of that size relative to the travel are a measurement of a handheld phone tracking a point in an empty sky, not of the object, so the filing's "random, smooth, seemed to change direction" is unsupported, and so would be any claim that it held a straight course.

What is the official explanation?
No official narrative exists. No agency, police department or airport authority has commented, the object appears in no Federal Aviation Administration or All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office record, and the archive found no local news coverage of the sighting.
The filing's own automated sky context block states that no bright satellites were visible overhead, computed from an orbital catalogue for 8 October 2026. That block is irrelevant here rather than wrong, for the reason the footage itself makes obvious: the sky in every frame is bright daylight with sunlit foliage and a blue sky, and satellites are not visible in daylight at all. The satellite hypothesis never existed for this case and the automated reassurance should not be read as having excluded anything.
What did the witnesses think it was?
The witness is a single person who has engaged openly with questions about the recording, which is worth noting because it is what allowed the only substantive dispute in the file to surface.
The dispute is about when this happened, and there are three answers. The filing's time field gives 8 October 2026 at 4:00 PM EDT. The witness's own written account inside the same filing opens by saying it was seen on 9 October, and in the thread they then said they recorded it on 8 October and submitted it on 9 October, that their phone gallery shows 8 October, and more precisely that they walk every day at four and saw it towards the end of the walk at about 4:45 on Thursday the 8th. Thursday is consistent: 8 October 2026 was a Thursday. A commenter who examined the uploaded file reported that its metadata reads 10:43:09 AM EDT on 9 October, and went on to pull historical ADS-B data for that time, finding a large DJI agricultural drone registered in the area while noting that its published specifications do not match the altitude, range and speed the ADS-B track showed.
A second commenter argued from the picture rather than the metadata, pointing out that the shadows cast by the trees in the opening frames look wrong for four in the afternoon in Massachusetts in October, when the sun would be only a few degrees above the horizon.
Separately, two other people in the thread reported their own sightings in the same part of Massachusetts in the same week, including a white or silver object seen moving quickly from west to east or southeast over West Boylston and Worcester on Friday 9 October. Neither is corroboration of this event, because neither is a record of this object, but they are logged here because the cluster is what prompted several readers to connect them.
Is the A Small Bright Object Filmed over Attleboro, Massachusetts real? The two-pass assessment
Pass one, how this could be mundane. The witness supplied the two best candidates themselves before anyone argued with them, a very small aircraft or a metallic balloon, and nothing measured here rules out either. The object is a few pixels across, sunlit, shape free and seen against a clear daytime sky, which is the exact presentation of a distant reflective balloon or a high aircraft catching the sun. The absence of a FlightRadar24 return is weak evidence at best, since that service shows cooperative transponder traffic and not every aircraft, and certainly not a balloon. The one claim that might have distinguished the object, the reported change of direction, dissolves on measurement into camera motion.
Pass two, what survives. Very little, and the case is published short for that reason rather than padded. What survives is that the object is genuinely in the frame at a strong contrast against the sky and was watched by the witness for about five minutes before filming began, which is a long time for a bird and a short time for a star. Nothing about it is exotic on this evidence.
The time question is the part worth leaving open, because it is answerable and has not been answered. The three candidate times are separated by a sky that differs enormously. Computed from JPL Horizons for the filing's coordinates, the sun on 8 October 2026 at 4:00 PM EDT stood at azimuth 237.9 degrees and elevation 22.7 degrees, at 4:45 PM at azimuth 246.8 and elevation 15.3, and on 9 October at 10:43 AM at azimuth 145.8 and elevation 35.5. That is a swing of ninety two degrees in bearing and a shadow length differing by a factor of two and a half, so the shadows in the opening frames could in principle decide it. They cannot decide it as the clip stands, because no vertical object of known orientation casts a shadow on a flat surface anywhere in frame, and this archive will not convert an impression of the lighting into a measurement it did not make. The metadata claim could not be checked either: the Reddit copy's container has been rewritten by libavformat, which strips the capture timestamp entirely, and the untouched original on the report archive sits behind a Cloudflare challenge. The case is tiered Unknown because no official explanation exists, not because the object is impressive, and the honest state of it is a real but unresolvable point of light on a disputed date.
