The Dark Triangle Filmed South of Carrollton, Georgia (Claimed 3 August 2026)
Eight Reddit posts across eight subreddits carried this footage in the space of half an hour, and it is one recording. The pixel comparison settles that. What the recording shows is the open question.
What did witnesses see at About five miles south of Carrollton?
The claim rests on a single piece of footage. A Reddit user posting as u/CartographerOk7579 says that on Monday 3 August 2026 at 6:40 PM he filmed a large dark triangular object through a passenger window while flying from Jackson, Mississippi to Atlanta, Georgia. In his own account he was "Sitting on the right side of the aircraft looking South", the aircraft was "37 minutes into the flight and roughly 16 minutes from landing", and that placed the object "near the AL/GA state line (approximately 5 miles south of Carrollton, GA)". He put the object at an estimated 5 to 8 miles away and said it "appeared to be moving very slowly relative to the cloud deck below". He states he shot it on an iPhone at 3x zoom and attributes the heavy digital noise in the frames to that zoom, while maintaining that the rigid geometric shape and the absence of conventional aviation features were clear to his naked eye. The recording ends, he says, only because the aircraft flew past the object and the viewing angle through the window went too shallow to hold it.
The structured filing he made at ufosighting.report, record 12747, gives the reported detail in fixed fields. One object. Shape triangle. Closest distance a few miles. Apparent size at arm's length, a pea. Movement straight and steady. Observer facing south. Duration eight minutes. Witnesses two. Captured on an iPhone 15. Against the five observables checklist the reporter answered no wings, no rotors, no exhaust plume, noise unsure, no sudden extreme acceleration, no extreme speed without signatures, no movement between air, water or space, hard to observe clearly yes, and flight without visible means of lift yes.
The footage itself is short. The copies Reddit hosts run one minute and twenty seven seconds at 720 by 1280, which is a portrait phone frame after Reddit's re-encode, and the reported eight minute duration therefore covers far more than was filmed. What the frames show is a bright blue sky in the upper part of the picture, a broken to solid cloud layer running below the aircraft, and a dark grey to near black wedge sitting above that layer with its long edge roughly horizontal. The shape holds its proportions through most of the clip and softens near the end. There is no visible fuselage, no wing, no tail, no strobe, no navigation light and no trailing plume in any frame.
Asked directly why it could not be an ordinary object, the filmer wrote that it was clearly a large black or dark grey triangle and that nothing else looks like that. He said his own first thought was a heavy exhaust plume and that he discarded it for three stated reasons: the object was very dark and consistent rather than thinning the way smoke does, the trailing end of the supposed plume was too sharply defined to be smoke, as was the whole triangular outline, and there was no leading aircraft anywhere in view that could have been producing it. He added that before he began recording he watched the object pass behind a nearer column of cloud, which is the observation he leans on for scale and for motion.
The single most discussed feature in the threads is not the object but what several viewers say sits under it. u/mark_paterson, in the most upvoted comment on the r/UFOB thread, asked whether anyone was going to mention the shadow it appears to cast on the cloud below. u/Ecstatic-Coat-1579, u/LooseWateryStool, u/SurprzTrustFall and u/LimeDry7124 all independently reported seeing the same dark patch on the deck beneath the wedge, and u/LimeDry7124 added that the patch remained after the small cloud near it had gone. u/ShadyAssFellow, who leans toward a cloud, conceded that the shadow is unusually dark for something that small and should read closer to translucent.
What is the official explanation?
There is no official narrative here at all, and that absence is worth stating plainly rather than dressing up. As of 8 August 2026 no agency of any kind has commented on this footage. The Federal Aviation Administration has issued no statement. No Notice to Air Missions, no pilot report and no controller transmission has been produced by anyone. Nothing was filed publicly with the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office. No entry matching a Georgia sighting on 3 August 2026 surfaced in the National UFO Reporting Center's public index, whose search pages return 403 to automated clients and could not be exhaustively read from here, so that check is honestly incomplete rather than negative. Searches of the Times-Georgian, which is Carrollton's own paper, and of WSB-TV, 11Alive and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution turned up no coverage of a 3 August object over Carroll County, and no wire story exists.
The one formal record is civilian and self-filed. ufosighting.report is a structured public sighting form, and record 12747 is the filing behind the r/UFOs post. That post was made by u/ufosightingsbot, the automated account that reposts filings to r/UFOs, and its pinned submission statement names u/CartographerOk7579 as the reporter and states that he confirmed the submission from his own Reddit account through a one time link. So the r/UFOs post is not a second witness and was never presented as one. It is the same man's report, machine relayed. The report page itself is behind a Cloudflare challenge and returns 403 to every automated client tried here, and there is no Wayback capture of it, so its contents are known only through the verbatim table the bot published to Reddit.
That auto generated record carries one problem that has to be logged. The bot renders the time as 6:40 PM CEST, which is Central European Summer Time and would place the event at 16:40 UTC, that is 12:40 PM in Georgia. The sky context links the same record generates are built for exactly that moment, including an ADS-B Exchange historical replay centred on 33.551 north, 85.068 west for 2026-08-03 at 16:40. The filmer's own narrative in the same record says 6:40 PM CDT, which is 7:40 PM Eastern in Georgia. Three clock readings for one moment. The reporter's own words are the best of them, but the timezone field in the formal record is wrong on its face, which matters because it is the field an investigator would otherwise trust.
The airspace context is not in dispute and is easy to establish. Carrollton lies roughly forty miles west southwest of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Airports Council International's global ranking published on 14 April 2026 put Hartsfield-Jackson first in the world for 2025 with 106.3 million passengers, and the airport's own material describes it as the busiest airport in the world, connecting to more than 150 domestic and nearly 70 international destinations. Carroll County sits under the western arrival and departure flow of that airport. An eastbound aircraft sixteen minutes from touchdown at Atlanta is descending through the teens over exactly this ground, and so is a great deal of other traffic.
The weather record is public and it is the closest thing to an independent instrument reading available. The automated station at West Georgia Regional Airport, which is Carrollton's own field, reported on 3 August 2026 in local Eastern time: scattered cloud at 2,100 feet with overcast at 7,500 feet at 4:55 PM, scattered at 2,500 feet with overcast at 10,000 feet at 5:55 PM, sky clear at 6:55 PM, sky clear at 7:55 PM, and scattered layers at 9,000 and 11,000 feet at 8:55 PM. An automated ceilometer only reports cloud below 12,000 feet, so those clear readings exclude a low or middle deck directly over the field at that minute and say nothing at all about anything higher. The United States Naval Observatory gives sunset at that latitude and longitude on that date as 8:38 PM Eastern, so both candidate times fall in full daylight with the sun low in the west, behind the right shoulder of an eastbound observer looking south.
What did the witnesses think it was?
The filmer is the whole witness base for the imagery, and he has been unusually available in the threads, which is worth something. He answered the contrail suggestion by saying that had been his own first reading and that he rejected it because there was no leading aircraft, no plume geometry and no thinning tail, adding that he flies often and knows what a contrail looks like. He answered the cloud suggestion by saying the object was grainy in his phone but not fuzzy to his eye, that it moved relative to the other clouds, and that he watched it pass behind a nearer cloud column before he started filming. Pressed on why he stopped recording at the point where the shape appears to soften, he gave the same explanation twice across two subreddits, that the aircraft had drawn level and past and the window angle had closed, and said he would otherwise have filmed until the battery died. He stated flatly, in reply to a direct question, that the video is his.
His structured filing records two witnesses. That second person is unnamed, has never posted, and has produced no separate footage or statement. On the honest reading that is one identified witness and one asserted one.
No one else anywhere has claimed to have seen this object on that evening. That is the finding, and it is a real one. Across all eight Reddit threads there is not a single comment from a Carroll County or west Georgia resident, from another passenger, from a pilot, or from anyone on the ground saying they saw anything over Carrollton on 3 August. The comments that superficially look like corroboration are nothing of the kind. u/pxth0gen described a silent triangle over Sullivan County, Tennessee around 2016. u/BeautifulCherry5824 described a cloud like shape seen repeatedly at four in the morning in another country. u/instant_iced_tea described a fast silent object over Washington in late June. u/throwawtphone described seeing a black triangular drone up close at some unstated time and place, carrying United States military markings and a tail number. These are separate anecdotes attached to a familiar shape. None of them touches this event.
The reader community split hard and stayed split. The pro side rests almost entirely on the apparent shadow on the cloud deck below and on the crispness of the corners. u/Glum-View-4665 put it well from the middle, saying his brain wanted to call it a cloud but the corners looked sharp and barely changed. u/Tall-Beautiful-6186 wrote that it does not look like a cloud, it looks like something trying to look like a cloud and failing. The sceptical side is at least as numerous and at least as insistent. u/Reeberom1 argued it is a cone rather than a triangle, shaded on one side like the other clouds, and that it goes fuzzy and dissipates at the end. u/IAmThatGuy84 argued the parallax shows it static relative to the large cloud below, which is the opposite of what the filmer reports. u/_Lady_Vengeance_ said it changes size and shape and has nearly evaporated by the point the recording stops. u/Sea_Appointment8408 wrote a pointed complaint that over a thousand users had upvoted a cloud and that saying so got you downvoted.
Two challenges in the threads went unanswered and both of them matter. u/BeanHeadedTwat and u/R2robot each asked for the flight number, which would have allowed anybody to pull the track and settle the geometry in minutes. u/R2robot additionally stated that the file metadata on the original-quality copy read 5 August rather than 3 August and asked the filmer to confirm the date. The filmer replied to many other comments and to neither of these.
Is the Dark Triangle Filmed South of Carrollton, Georgia (Claimed 3 August 2026) real? The two-pass assessment
Pass one begins with the thing that would otherwise have been written up as corroboration, because that is the most valuable claim this archive makes and therefore the one most worth breaking. This footage appeared on Reddit eight times inside twenty seven minutes on 6 August 2026, in eight different subreddits, under three different account names, and it is one recording. u/CartographerOk7579 posted it to r/UFOB at 13:16:33 UTC. u/ufosightingsbot posted the structured filing to r/UFOs at 13:30:01 UTC. u/littlespacemochi then posted it to r/aliens at 13:40:10, r/UFOLOGIA at 13:41:25, r/HighStrangeness at 13:41:53, r/NJDrones at 13:42:04, r/AliensRHere at 13:42:26 and r/InterdimensionalNHI at 13:43:07. Reddit assigned at least five separate v.redd.it media identifiers across those posts, which is exactly what makes a spray of this kind look like several sources to anyone counting posts.
It is not several sources, and this was tested rather than assumed. Two of the distinct v.redd.it media items were downloaded and compared frame by frame. Both are 00:01:27.01 long at 720 by 1280. A structural similarity comparison at zero offset returned 1.000000 on the luma channel and 1.000000 across all channels, which is an infinite decibel result, over all 2,609 frames, against a control value of 0.712335 when one clip is shifted by ten seconds. The two uploads are pixel identical. Separately, the filmer himself confirmed the position in the r/aliens thread, writing that the footage is his and that he did not post it to that subreddit. u/ufosightingsbot's own pinned statement names him as the reporter behind the r/UFOs post. The aggregator account's history shows the same behaviour on other people's clips from Curitiba, Itanhaem and Chapada dos Veadeiros in Brazil, posted to the same ring of six subreddits within a minute or two of each other. There is one video, one camera, one claimed witness and one asserted second witness. The word corroboration does not belong anywhere near this case.
With that settled, the prosaic candidates. The first and strongest is a cloud, and it deserves to be taken seriously rather than waved past, because it is the reading a large fraction of the audience arrived at independently. The footage is shot down onto a cloud layer from an aircraft, the object sits at the same tonal value as the shaded flanks of the cumulus below it, its outline softens over the final seconds, and several viewers read the motion as static relative to the deck rather than moving across it. Small cumulus turrets and sheared fragments genuinely do present hard straight edges against blue sky, and a flat topped fragment viewed from above and slightly to the side is a common way to get a wedge. Against that, the filmer says he watched it pass behind a nearer cloud column before recording, which if true is an occultation and disposes of the cloud reading, and no one but him saw that, because it happened before the camera was running. The end of the clip is the crux and it is genuinely ambiguous: the shape either dissipates or goes out of focus at a shallow window angle, and the compression of a digitally zoomed phone frame on a low contrast target is exactly where the evidence needed to decide runs out. Nobody has published a frame by frame analysis of the original-quality file, and until somebody does the cloud reading remains an assertion rather than a demonstration.
The reported angular size is the sharpest number in the record and it cuts both ways. A pea held at arm's length subtends roughly two thirds of a degree. At the reported 5 to 8 miles that works out at roughly 300 to 550 feet across. Nothing that flies is that size. The largest aircraft ever built has a wingspan of under 300 feet and a B-2 spans 172. So if the distance estimate is anywhere near right, the object is not an aircraft of any kind, and a cloud fragment is the only ordinary thing left that fits. If instead the true range was under a mile, which is entirely possible because range estimation to an unresolved shape against sky from a moving cabin is notoriously unreliable and the estimate here was made by eye through a window, the object drops to a few tens of feet and the whole aircraft family reopens. The estimate is the reporter's and there is no independent measurement of it.
The other candidates can be worked through quickly and honestly. A contrail seen end on was proposed repeatedly, including by u/candycane7, u/c0ntra, u/iAwesome3 and u/FastIndy, and it is a real and well documented illusion. It is weakened here by the absence of any leading aircraft in frame and by the shape holding a wedge rather than a rod, and it is not helped by the fact that the video u/candycane7 offered as the higher quality version was a different video entirely, which three separate commenters pointed out. Another aircraft seen from an unusual angle is the standard answer for a dark shape filmed from a cabin, and Carrollton is a very good place for that answer, sitting under the western flow of the busiest airport in the world, but a delta planform head on at a few miles reads as a thin line and not as a filled dark wedge with a soft trailing edge, and the size figure above argues against it too. A reflection or a smudge on the cabin window or the lens was raised by u/Barbu64 and can be dismissed on the plainest ground available: the object drifts across the frame relative to the clouds and the aircraft is turning during the clip, and a mark on glass does not do that. Birds were proposed and were answered inside the thread with a fact rather than an opinion, since starlings do not fly at the altitude an aircraft sixteen minutes from Atlanta occupies. Blimps and airships fly low, slowly and near events, are unmistakably lenticular and cannot be mistaken for a hard edged triangle from above. A conventional balloon does not hold straight edges. A drone at 5 to 8 miles would be invisible. The stealth bomber and black project suggestions, made by u/Feisty_Database_6656, u/hugh_jassole7, u/Historical_Sun93 and u/Barbu64, are the most interesting of the aircraft options because the planform is right, but no public record establishes a B-2 or any other delta planform military transit of west Georgia on 3 August 2026, no such transit could be verified from here, and the size figure sits badly against it. It stays an unverified guess.
The weather record is where an ordinary explanation nearly gets its confirmation and then does not quite. The automated station at Carrollton's own airport reported an overcast layer at 7,500 feet at 4:55 PM Eastern and at 10,000 feet at 5:55 PM, then sky clear at 6:55 and 7:55 PM. The filmer's stated 6:40 PM Central converts to 7:40 PM Eastern, which falls inside that clear window, and the footage plainly shows a substantial deck below the aircraft. That is a genuine tension in the record. It does not resolve cleanly in either direction, because an automated ceilometer sees nothing above 12,000 feet, and an aircraft descending through the mid teens looking down at a layer between 12,000 and 15,000 feet would be looking at cloud the station is blind to, with mid level scattered layers at 9,000 and 11,000 feet reappearing over the field by 8:55 PM. The deck could also simply have been a few miles away rather than over the field. What can be said is that the weather sequence fits a 6:40 PM Eastern reading of the timestamp rather better than a 7:40 PM Eastern one, and that the formal record's own timezone field is demonstrably wrong, and that a commenter reported the file metadata reads 5 August. Three separate wobbles in the timekeeping, none of them fatal, none of them answered.
Pass two. If this is not a cloud, what is on the frames is a large dark triangle holding a rigid outline for a minute and a half over a cloud deck in busy Class B feeder airspace, showing no wings, no rotors, no lights, no plume and no visible means of lift, moving slowly and steadily. That is the classic black triangle report, and the archive already holds the serious versions of it: the Belgian wave of 1989 to 1990 with its radar returns and F-16 intercepts, the Phoenix lights of March 1997, the St Clair County police triangle of January 2000 watched by named officers across two Illinois counties, the Bristol, Tennessee close encounter of 2004, and the 1953 F-86 triangle over Albany in this same state. Every one of those has something this does not: multiple independent observers, or instrumented data, or both. The Carrollton clip has one camera and one man. That is the honest measure of it, and it is why the shape being familiar is not evidence of anything.
What genuinely resists the ordinary readings is short but not nothing. The apparent shadow on the deck below, noticed independently by at least five separate viewers and conceded as anomalously dark even by a sceptic, is the single strongest observation in the whole record, because a shadow implies an opaque body above an illuminated surface and the geometry is right for it with the sun low in the west and the observer looking south. The reported pre recording occultation, the object passing behind a nearer cloud column, would end the cloud argument if it could be verified, and it cannot. The straight edges holding their proportions across most of the clip is a real feature of the frames and not just a claim about them. Against all of that: no second witness, no second camera, no news coverage, no official acknowledgement, no radar, no flight number offered when twice asked, no answer to the metadata date challenge, no analysis of the original-quality file by anyone, and an eight post Reddit footprint that was manufactured in twenty seven minutes by a single account spray and which would have been misread as independent corroboration by anyone who simply counted subreddits.
No official narrative exists, and no one has produced a method shown identification of this object. The cloud reading is the leading civilian explanation and it is widely held, but it has been argued rather than demonstrated: nobody has published a frame analysis, a motion track or a measurement, and the filmer's occultation claim, unverifiable as it is, has not been disposed of. Under this archive's rules a plausible but unproven reconstruction does not carry a case into a disputed tier, and crowd assertion carries nothing. The case is tiered Unknown. It stands on one clip and one witness, and it should be read as exactly that and never as three witnesses or eight sources.
