A Silent Triangle Reported under a 1,700 Foot Overcast at Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa, United States  ·  15 October 2026  ·  Triangle · United States

A data plot, not a photograph of the object. Topocentric positions of the Sun, Moon and the four bright planets above Cedar Rapids at 10:00 PM CDT on 15 October 2026, from JPL Horizons. Only Saturn is above the horizon, at azimuth 135 degrees, roughly 90 degrees from the direction the witness reported facing, and the nearest weather station reported a solid overcast at 1,700 feet eight minutes before the sighting.

No camera was ever pointed at it, but the cloud deck that night decides more about this report than any photograph would have.

What did witnesses see at Cedar Rapids?

A witness in Cedar Rapids, Iowa reported a silent triangular object with three lights at its tips at 10:00 PM on 15 October 2026. No photograph or video of it exists.

The account was published twice by the same person within about thirteen hours. She posted it first to r/AlienAbduction at 11:50 PM local on 15 October, under the title "Just had yet another experience", about an hour and fifty minutes after the event she describes. She then filed a structured report through ufosighting.report, which the site's bot relayed to r/UFOs at 12:39 PM local on 16 October, with her identity confirmed from her own Reddit account through a one time link. The two accounts agree in every detail that appears in both.

The structured filing gives the time as 10:00 PM CDT, the location as Cedar Rapids in Linn County, the shape as triangle, one object, the observer facing northeast, the duration as 10 seconds, one witness, and the closest distance as very close, under 50 feet. Under the five observables she answered no to noise, unsure to wings, rotors and exhaust plume, and yes to sudden extreme acceleration, extreme speed with no signatures, hard to observe clearly, and flight without visible means of lift. Asked why it could not be a common object, she answered that she had checked radar and records of flights and satellites.

The filing states explicitly that no photo or video was submitted with the report. This matters because the Reddit posts carry images. Those images are not hers and are not of the event. In both accounts she says she searched online afterwards for a picture resembling what she saw and attached the closest match she found. Nothing visual in either post is evidence of anything, and no frame from Cedar Rapids exists.

What is the official explanation?

No official body has commented. There is no National Weather Service note, no law enforcement report known to this archive, no local news coverage, and no Federal Aviation Administration statement. The Eastern Iowa Airport lies about eight kilometres southwest of the city centre and no incident involving it has been reported.

The only corroboration offered anywhere is a single comment on the r/UFOs thread reading, in full, "I saw the same thing 8:35 pm EST as well." It carries no location, no description, and no account. It is also two hours and twenty five minutes earlier than the reported sighting once the stated time zones are taken at face value, since 8:35 PM Eastern is 7:35 PM Central. This archive does not treat it as a second witness. Corroboration means an independent record of the same event, and a one line comment giving a different time, no place and no detail is not that.

What did the witnesses think it was?

The witness wrote her first account while still awake and before sleeping, which is unusually close to the event for a report of this kind. In it she says: "tonight I was out on my back porch. 10 pm (1.5 hours ago). Dark as hell out. And something made me glance over to my right. As I do, I noticed this hovering/slowly moving, triangular shape with three lights on each tip. The lights were red and then they were white. It didn't make any sound, and as soon as I noticed it, it disappeared."

She also reports physical sensations beginning at the moment she noticed the object: a beeping sound in her right ear, a hum or buzzing in her head, sudden dizziness, and what she calls a strong feeling of deja vu. In both posts she then volunteers that she has had what she describes as numerous experiences across her life, beginning with a believed abduction between the ages of two and four, and she recounts recurring mental images she says have not changed in more than thirty years.

That context is reported here because she reported it, and because withholding it would misrepresent the document. It is not treated as evidence either for or against the object. A witness's history of anomalous experience does not make a light in the sky real, and it does not make it unreal; the only things that bear on what was over Cedar Rapids that night are the described lights and the measurable state of the sky they were seen against.

The two accounts differ on one point worth recording. The first says the object "disappeared" as soon as she noticed it, with no duration given; the structured filing, written the following afternoon, gives the duration as 10 seconds and says in the free text that it "lasted maybe 5-10 seconds". That is ordinary drift in a time estimate recounted a day later, not a contradiction, but the shorter and vaguer first telling is the earlier one.

Is the A Silent Triangle Reported under a 1,700 Foot Overcast at Cedar Rapids, Iowa real? The two-pass assessment

Pass one, how could this be mundane. The sky over Cedar Rapids that night is fully reconstructable, and it eliminates one whole family of explanations while strengthening another.

The Iowa Environmental Mesonet archive for station KCID, The Eastern Iowa Airport, records broken cloud at 1,600 and 2,200 feet at 8:52 PM with ten statute miles of visibility, and then a solid overcast at 1,700 feet at 9:52 PM, eight minutes before the reported sighting, with the wind from 310 degrees at 15 knots. A solid deck at 1,700 feet is a hard ceiling on the case. Nothing above it was visible from the ground, and whatever she saw was below it.

That kills the astronomical answer outright rather than merely making it unlikely. Topocentric positions from JPL Horizons for her coordinates at 03:00 UTC on 16 October, which is 10:00 PM local on the 15th, put the Moon at 8.2 degrees below the horizon, Venus at 41.1 below, Mars at 24.9 below, Jupiter at 32.0 below and the Sun at 39.8 below. Saturn alone was up, at 40.1 degrees altitude and magnitude plus 0.4, but at azimuth 135 degrees, which is southeast and roughly 90 degrees away from the northeast she reported facing, and in any case invisible beneath an overcast. Satellites fail for the same reason twice over, since they are only visible against a clear sky and the deck was solid.

What the ceiling does instead is promote the conventional candidate. Below 1,700 feet, in the dark, the thing most likely to present three lights that are red and then white, in a triangular arrangement, is an aircraft. Red and white alternation is the standard external lighting signature of civil aircraft, which carry a red anti collision beacon and white strobes, and a triangle of lights seen from below is the ordinary appearance of two wingtip positions plus a tail. The reported silence is weaker evidence than it seems: a 15 knot northwesterly was blowing, the witness was on a back porch in a city, and aircraft at low altitude are routinely reported as silent by witnesses who were not listening for them beforehand. The filing's "very close, under 50 feet" is a subjective night time distance estimate by a single observer with no reference object, and estimates of that kind are the least reliable field on any sighting form.

This archive could not close that candidate. Confirming or excluding a specific aircraft needs historical ADS-B playback for the minute and the coordinates, which requires an interactive browser session that was not available on this run. That check is named here so the next person can run it: it is the single test that would settle this case.

Pass two, if real, what is it. There is nothing to analyse. No image, no video, no instrument record, no second witness, and a ten second observation by one person. The described object, a silent low triangle with three lights cycling red to white, is one of the most frequently reported shapes in the literature and also one of the most frequently resolved as conventional aircraft. The reported physiological effects are real as reported experience and are not measurable from here.

The case is tiered Disputed rather than Unknown because a specific, strong and ordinary explanation is available and unexcluded, and it is not tiered more harshly than that because nothing has actually been demonstrated. An honest reporter, an impossible astronomical answer, a hard cloud ceiling and an untested aircraft hypothesis is exactly the evidential position the Disputed tier exists to describe. It is published because it is a fresh, dated, location pinned report whose sky could be reconstructed, and the reconstruction turned out to carry the whole case.
