A married couple in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho filed a report with the National UFO Reporting Center describing a very large rectangular object hovering over a tree line in the middle of the afternoon, and attached cellphone video. The footage sits behind a server this archive cannot read.
What did witnesses see at Coeur d'Alene?
On 14 August 2026 a married couple in Coeur d'Alene, in the Idaho panhandle, filed a sighting report with the National UFO Reporting Center. The report was logged as case number 200185. It describes a very large object hovering above a tree line in full daylight at around two in the afternoon.
The object is reported as rectangular, and as showing multiple colours of light, with lights blinking on two separate sides of it. The witnesses put its size at somewhere between 300 and 400 feet. They recorded it on a cellphone, and that video was submitted with the report.
The archive has to be blunt about the limits of the paragraphs above. Every detail in them comes from Greg Jannetta's account of the NUFORC filing, published by the Twin Falls radio station KEZJ on 21 August 2026, and from the witnesses' own report as he summarised it. This archive has not seen the video. The size figure in particular is a witness estimate of an object at unknown range, which is the least reliable quantity in any sighting report and should not be read as a measurement.
What is the official explanation?
There is no official narrative attached to this sighting, and no agency has been asked to produce one. The National UFO Reporting Center is a private clearinghouse that has collected and published public sighting reports since 1974. It is not a government body, its case numbers carry no official standing, and a report appearing in its database means only that someone filed it.
No statement from the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Weather Service, Fairchild Air Force Base, the Idaho Air National Guard or any local authority has been located in connection with this date and location. That absence is the ordinary condition of a civilian sighting report and is not itself evidence of anything.
KEZJ reported that the filing was the seventeenth Idaho report of 2026 to be taken up by NUFORC. In the absence of a readable copy of NUFORC's own index this archive has not confirmed that count independently.
What did the witnesses think it was?
The witnesses are a married couple. They are not publicly named, and nothing in the available reporting identifies them, their vantage point within Coeur d'Alene, or the direction they were facing. No second witness, no separate recording and no corroborating report from the same afternoon has surfaced in searches of Reddit, YouTube, X and general web indexes.
The one substantive secondary account is Jannetta's KEZJ piece of 21 August 2026. It has been republished across a number of other Townsquare Media station sites, which look at a glance like independent pickups but are not: the syndicated copies carry the same byline and the same station path, so they are one article, not several. There is, at present, exactly one outlet on this story.
The primary record is the NUFORC report itself, and this is where the case runs into a wall. The footage is held on the NUFORC report page, and nuforc.org answers automated retrieval with a Cloudflare challenge rather than the page. This archive tested it again for this entry with a browser user agent, with no user agent at all, and against the WordPress and index endpoints, and received HTTP 403 every time. The Wayback Machine holds no capture of this report. No mirror carries the video. The result is that the single piece of physical evidence in this case has not been reviewed by anyone here, and the case is published on that understanding rather than in spite of it.
Is the Coeur d'Alene Rectangular Object, Idaho (14 August 2026) real? The two-pass assessment
Pass one, how could this be mundane.
A large rectangular object hanging above a tree line in daylight with blinking lights on two sides has an obvious prosaic shape to it, and the obvious candidate is something suspended or tethered rather than something flying. A banner or advertising rig, construction or utility equipment on a lift, a drone carrying a lighting array, or a mylar or advertising balloon at short range would all read as rectangular, would all sit apparently motionless, and would all be badly misjudged for size by an observer with no distance cue. Daylight sightings over a treeline are exactly the geometry in which range estimation fails worst, because a tree line gives a false sense of how far away the object is and therefore how big it must be. A 300 to 400 foot estimate is far more likely to be a small object nearby than a large one far off.
Against that, the reported multicoloured and blinking lights are not typical of a balloon, and a daylight recording clear enough for a reporter to describe blinking lights on two distinct faces is not a trivial artefact. That is as far as the reasoning can honestly go, because the test that would settle most of this is watching the video, and the video is not reachable.
Pass two, if the account is accurate.
If the couple recorded what they describe, the case is a daylight structured object sighting with video, which is the most valuable category this archive collects and the rarest. Daylight footage removes most of the ambiguity that makes night light cases intractable. That is precisely why the inaccessibility of this particular file is worth recording rather than glossing over.
The tier is Unknown, and it is Unknown for the plain reason that no official body has offered an account and this archive has been unable to examine the only evidence that exists. It is not Unknown because the case has survived scrutiny. It has not yet had any. The entry is published because the event is recent, the location is fixed, the report is traceable to a dated filing and a named reporter, and the archive's standing preference is to log a fresh sighting early and enrich it as more surfaces. If the footage becomes reachable, or a second witness or a local news pickup appears, this case will be revisited and the assessment rewritten.
