A witness watching the stars through infrared binoculars in the Colorado foothills recorded an object that could not be seen with the naked eye, and reported it as a chevron. The recording carries its own clock, and the sky that night carried 29,411 birds.

What did witnesses see at Unincorporated Jefferson County?

A witness in the Colorado foothills recorded an object through infrared binoculars on the night of 12 September 2026. The report was filed through the structured form on ufosighting.report, where it is entry 12976, and posted to Reddit by the automated account u/ufosightingsbot on 14 September.

The first thing to correct is the location. The filing is titled and labelled Denver, Colorado, and both the Reddit headline and the report's own location field say Denver. The map entry does not. It places the observer at 39.8929, -105.2779, and the United States Census Bureau geocoder returns Jefferson County, Golden CCD, Census Tract 98.58, with no incorporated place, meaning unincorporated county land. That position is 29.9 kilometres west northwest of downtown Denver and 13.6 kilometres from Boulder, in the Front Range foothills, and the United States Geological Survey elevation service puts it at 2,097 metres above sea level. This is the second consecutive day on which a ufosightingsbot filing has carried a headline city that its own coordinates contradict, following the Spring Hill case filed as Rochester, New York. The second correction comes from the footage itself, which carries a burned in device clock. The recording runs continuously from 22:04:24 to 22:05:23 on 2026/09/12, one second per frame across sixty frames with no break or discontinuity in the sequence. The filing states the event occurred at 9:30 PM MDT and gives its duration as 15 seconds. The device clock reads 34 minutes later than the stated time, and the recording is four times longer than the stated duration. Neither discrepancy is necessarily suspicious, since a device clock can be wrong and a witness recalling a time after the fact can be approximate, but the clock is the only timestamp in this case that was written at the moment of recording, and it is the one used for the sky checks below.

What the recording shows is a single compact bright object crossing the field of view. The camera can be shown to be static rather than panning: registering the frames against one another by FFT phase correlation returns a shift of exactly zero pixels in both axes on every frame through the relevant interval, with a steady correlation peak around 0.60. The motion in the frame is therefore the object's own. Between roughly 17.3 and 18.7 seconds into the clip the object travels from the bottom edge of the frame to about a fifth of the way down from the top, crossing close to four fifths of the frame height in about 1.4 seconds. No angular rate is given here, because the field of view of the device is not stated in the filing and cannot be recovered from the footage, and a rate quoted without it would be a guess dressed as a measurement.

At native resolution the object does not resolve into a chevron. It is a compact blob roughly thirty pixels across whose outline changes from frame to frame, appearing rounder in some samples and elongated along different axes in others. That observation carries a caveat that has to be stated plainly: no original quality file was attached to this report, unlike the Spring Hill and Bronx filings, so the only copy available is Reddit's re-encode, and block artefacts in a dark, low contrast, heavily compressed night scene can imitate structural change. What is the official explanation?

No official body has commented on this sighting. There is no Federal Aviation Administration statement, no law enforcement report and no news coverage. The National UFO Reporting Center carries no matching entry. As with most single witness filings of this kind, the structured report is the only record that exists.

The reporter conducted two checks of their own and recorded both. They rejected Starlink on the grounds that the object was too low for a satellite, and they stated that it was not a known man made object. The satellite rejection is sound for a different reason than the one given: the filing's own automatically generated sky context lists six satellite passes that night, of which the nearest in time are CZ-4B R/B at 73 degrees above the southwest at 03:45 UTC and SL-16 R/B at 62 degrees above the southeast at 03:30 UTC, but a satellite is a slow steady point that crosses the sky over minutes, and the object in this recording crosses most of a frame in under a second and a half.

What did the witnesses think it was?

The report was filed by the Reddit user Strawberry_1980, verified through a one time link from their own Reddit account. The account given in the filing is brief and is quoted here in full.

"Looking at the stars with my infrared binoculars when this comes by. Could not be seen with the human eye. I have seen this craft before. A few years ago in Boulder."

The structured fields record one object, shape chevron, closest distance above the trees, movement random and smooth, observer facing southeast, duration 15 seconds, and sensor detection infrared. On the five observables the reporter answered No to wings, rotors, exhaust plume, noise, sudden extreme acceleration, extreme speed with no signatures, hard to observe clearly and movement between air, water or space, and Yes only to flight without visible means of lift.

That set of answers is unusually restrained, and it deserves to be said clearly that this reporter did not overclaim. They did not report speed, acceleration, or manoeuvres that the footage would have to support. The single affirmative answer, flight without visible means of lift, is the one that any object seen in silhouette or in thermal contrast at night will produce.

The detail that matters most is the one in the second sentence. The object could not be seen with the naked eye. It was visible only through the infrared device. That is a strong constraint, and it is pursued below.

Five commenters responded on Reddit within hours. Four proposed birds, in the terms "looks like geese being lit from underneath", "Or any number of similar birds. It's migration season, prepare yourself for waves of these posts", and "ppl never seen birds before huh". The fifth proposed an orb formation. No commenter offered any analysis beyond the assertion.

Pass one, how this could be entirely ordinary.

The commenters who said birds were guessing, but the guess can be tested, and the test is the part of this case that has not been done anywhere else.

BirdCast, the migration radar product operated by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, publishes nightly migration measurements by county. Its dashboard is a JavaScript application and a previous attempt to read it for a different case failed on that basis, but the data is in fact recoverable without a browser, because the page is server side rendered and the whole night's series sits inline in the page's hydration payload. Read that way for Jefferson County, Colorado on the night of 12 September 2026, the numbers are not marginal.

At 22:00 local time, five minutes before the device clock's reading at the moment the object crosses the frame, BirdCast reports 29,411 birds aloft over Jefferson County, at a vertically integrated density of 38.4, moving on an average heading of 152.7 degrees, which is south southeast, at an average speed of 11.4. The night's peak, at 00:20, was 32,524 birds aloft. The cumulative total for the night was 112,192. The season code is FA, autumn migration, running from 1 August to 15 November. In other words the object crossed a sky that measurably contained tens of thousands of migrating birds, on a heading consistent with autumn migration, at the height of the season.

The weather supports the same reading and excludes an alternative. The automated station at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport reported CLR and 10 statute miles at both 02:55 and 03:55 UTC, bracketing the recording. There was no cloud deck, so nothing was being lit from below by reflected town light off a ceiling, which was the mechanism behind a superficially similar cluster of lights case in San Antonio the previous night. Whatever produced the contrast here did so against clear sky.

Then the constraint the reporter supplied themselves. The object could not be seen with the naked eye. An aircraft carries navigation lights and is visible unaided. A satellite bright enough to record is visible unaided. A drone at close range carries lights. An object that is invisible to the eye but bright to an infrared device is an object that is being detected by heat or by reflected infrared rather than by emitted visible light, and a warm bodied animal a few hundred metres away is the commonest thing in that category. A bird at night, invisible against a dark sky to the eye, is routinely conspicuous through a digital night vision or thermal device. This single stated detail does more to constrain the case than any other field in the filing, and it points away from craft rather than toward one.

Taken together: peak autumn migration with 29,411 birds measured aloft over this exact county at this exact time, a clear sky, an object invisible to the unaided eye but bright in infrared, a compact form roughly thirty pixels across with no stable rigid outline, and a fast traverse of the field of view. Birds, most likely a small group at close range, account for all of it.

Pass two, if it is not that, what is it.

Two things keep this case from being closed outright, and both are limits in the evidence rather than positive indications of anything exotic.

The first is that no original quality file was filed. Every strong statement about the object's shape depends on the only copy that exists, which is a compressed Reddit re-encode of a dark scene, and that is exactly the material in which compression artefacts most readily masquerade as structure. The absence of a visible chevron is therefore a statement about what can be seen in the available copy, not a demonstration that the reporter saw no such thing through the eyepiece.

The second is that the device is unspecified. The filing says infrared binoculars and nothing more. Without a make, a model or a stated field of view there is no way to convert the measured traverse into an angular rate, and without an angular rate there is no way to test whether the motion is consistent with a bird at a few hundred metres, which would be the decisive calculation. Whether the device used an active infrared illuminator also matters and is unknown, because an illuminator has a range of at most a few hundred metres and would by itself place the object close.

The two timing discrepancies noted above are left standing rather than resolved. The device clock and the reported time differ by 34 minutes, and the recording is 60 seconds against a reported 15. These are the kind of ordinary inconsistencies that a witness writing up an event afterwards produces, and no weight is placed on them here beyond preferring the clock for the sky checks.

Tier Disputed rather than Strongly Disputed. A specific prosaic explanation is available and is supported by a hard, independently sourced measurement of what was in that sky at that minute, which is considerably more than the commenters who asserted the same answer had. It falls short of the standard applied to the Spring Hill case, where a single named object was identified by position and magnitude, because no identification of this object has been demonstrated, no named analyst has examined it, and the only available copy of the footage is one that cannot support a shape argument in either direction.
