What is the official explanation?
No official body has commented and no agency narrative exists. There has been no local news coverage, no police statement and no airport comment.
The reporter's own check is worth recording because it was sound as far as it went. They compared what they saw against Starlink satellite passes and against scheduled drone shows, and rejected both, correctly noting that a Starlink train presents as an evenly spaced line of points travelling in one direction rather than as a randomly rearranging group. That reasoning is right and it does rule out the two things it examined.

More than that, their positions relative to one another change from panel to panel: the group spreads, contracts and rearranges its internal geometry, so that no two frames show the same configuration. A rigid craft cannot do that. Whatever this is, it is a number of individual things moving independently while travelling roughly together, and the reporter's own answer of changing under shape is a more accurate description of it than the count of one.
The weather record supplies the second half. The automated station at San Antonio International Airport reported, at 02:51 UTC on 12 September 2026, which is seven minutes after the time given in the filing, a broken cloud layer at 4,000 feet with a second broken layer at 6,500 feet, visibility of 10 statute miles, wind at 16 knots and a temperature of 88 degrees Fahrenheit. The hour before had shown broken cloud at 4,000 and 6,500 feet as well. That matters twice over. It puts a hard ceiling on the scene, because anything seen against or below that deck was below four thousand feet. It also explains the backdrop: a broken deck at four thousand feet over a city of one and a half million reflects the city's lighting back down, which is why the object in this clip appears against a dimly lit grey sky rather than against black, and why one frame shows a distinctly brighter patch.
Put together, the reading that fits without strain is birds or bats caught in urban skyglow, lit from below by the same light that is lighting the cloud. It accounts for the silence, for the low altitude, for the absence of wings or rotors or exhaust at that distance and resolution, for the smooth but abruptly redirecting motion, and above all for a non rigid group that continuously rearranges itself. San Antonio sits under the Central Flyway and holds some of the largest bat colonies in North America, so neither candidate is exotic there in September.
