An Amber Light Above the Clouds Near San Francisco (23 June 2026)

Over the San Francisco Bay Area, California  ·  23 June 2026  ·  Eyewitness Footage · United States

A frame from the witness video, filmed through an aircraft window at night, showing a bright amber and white light with a horizontal flare beside it, above a deck of cloud lit from below by the city glow. A zoomed crop appears below. (Passenger footage shared by Reddit user "HourCharacter1618," posted to r/UFOs on 24 June 2026.)

Just after midnight on 23 June 2026, a passenger on a flight near San Francisco filmed a bright amber light sitting above the cloud deck outside the window. The person who recorded it says their partner watched the light split into three separate points about half a minute after the camera stopped.

What did witnesses see at Over the San Francisco Bay Area?

The clip runs about twelve seconds and is shot through an aircraft window at night. Below is a flat deck of cloud lit orange by the city glow beneath it. Above the cloud sits a single bright warm white light with a horizontal flare or smear beside it, the brightest thing in an otherwise dark sky. Part of the aircraft wing is visible in some of the footage.

The witness places the time at 12:08 in the morning on 23 June 2026, over the San Francisco area. A zoomed crop shows the light as a brilliant core with a secondary point or streak to one side rather than a single clean disc.

What is the official explanation?

There is no official account. The case is a single passenger recording posted to a public forum. No agency, airline or news outlet has commented on it, and no second recording from the ground or from another passenger has surfaced.

What did the witnesses think it was?

The clip was posted on 24 June 2026 to the r/UFOs community on Reddit by the user "HourCharacter1618." The account is brief and open: the light was spotted over the San Francisco area at 12:08 in the morning on 23 June 2026; the poster's girlfriend saw it and believed it was a craft, and said it split into three distinct lights about thirty seconds after the video stopped recording. The poster asked for other people's thoughts rather than asserting any conclusion.

Is the An Amber Light Above the Clouds Near San Francisco (23 June 2026) real? The two-pass assessment

Pass one, the mundane reading. Footage shot through an aircraft window at night carries a specific hazard, which is reflection. A cabin light, a phone screen or a seatback light bouncing off the double pane window produces bright points and horizontal smears that hang in the dark exactly like an external light, and the flare beside this object is consistent with that. The other strong candidate is a real external light: another aircraft's landing lights or flashing beacons, or a bright planet such as Venus or Jupiter, any of which reads as a fixed brilliant point from a moving plane. The reported splitting into three lights could be a reflection breaking up, the separate lights of an aircraft resolving as the angle changed, or the camera shifting focus.

Pass two, if it is not that. If the light is not a reflection or a conventional source, what remains is a bright luminous object holding above the cloud deck that then divided into three, which would be unusual. But a pane of glass between the camera and the object, together with the absence of any second witness on the ground or any corroborating footage, means the reflection and conventional light readings cannot be ruled out, and they remain the most economical.

The case is filed as Unknown because no identification has been confirmed. A window reflection or a conventional external light is the leading ordinary explanation, and the case rests on one short clip filmed through glass from a moving aircraft.
