A Dark Four-Cornered Object Filmed over South Point, Hawaii on 26 October 2026

Ka Lae (South Point), Kau District, Hawaii Island  ·  26 October 2026  ·  Eyewitness Footage · United States

The object at 35 seconds, enlarged from the witness recording. Four corners, concave edges and a bowed surface, which is the silhouette of a flat sail under tension rather than a rigid body. (Witness recording posted to r/UFOs by u/LusciousHawaiian, frame located and enlarged by UAP Globe)

The object is real, it is 48 standard deviations darker than the sky behind it, and when you enlarge it, it has four corners, concave edges and a canopy that billows.

What did witnesses see at Ka Lae (South Point)?

A witness filmed a dark four-cornered object over South Point on the island of Hawaii. The recording runs one minute and forty-eight seconds and shows a single object against a bright, almost featureless overcast, with the ocean horizon and a cliff edge visible only at the start and the end of the clip.

The witness, posting as u/LusciousHawaiian, gave the time as 4 pm on 26 October 2026 and the place as South Point, which is Ka Lae, the southernmost point of the island and of the United States. In the thread they added that the object showed "4 orange lights or something glowing", that there was no beach below, and that a person who appears in the opening seconds had only just walked up and sat down while filming was already under way. Asked what happened afterwards, they wrote that they went home because a large storm was coming in.

This archive recovered the Reddit copy of the recording and measured it. Sampling every fifth frame across the pure-sky window from 8 to 95 seconds, the object was located by subtracting a Gaussian-blurred background and keeping only compact connected components, giving 523 tracked samples.

The object is unambiguously real. Measured against a ring of sky well outside it, rather than against a blurred version of the frame containing it, the object sits a mean 147.6 grey levels below the surrounding sky, against an annulus noise figure of 3.08 grey levels. That is roughly 48 standard deviations. Nothing about this is a compression artifact or a sensor defect.

What the object does, however, is not what a rigid body does. Its silhouette area swings from 29 to 1,207 pixels across the clip, a factor of 41.6, with a coefficient of variation of 94.3 per cent, and the largest swing inside any single second is a factor of 7.0.

The obvious objection to that measurement is that the object is simply moving towards and away from the camera, or that the operator zoomed. One correlation tests it. On a receding object, contrast falls away with apparent area; on a body that is changing its orientation, it does not. The correlation between area and contrast here is 0.108, which is to say there is effectively none: the lowest-area decile of samples sits 125.5 grey levels below sky and the highest-area decile sits 145.8, against a mean of 147.6. The object is not receding. It is turning.

The same object at 18.3 seconds, at its largest measured silhouette area of 1,207 pixels. The form is billowing and the fabric is visibly slack, with a lighter band across the middle. Contrast against the sky is essentially unchanged from the small-area frames, which is why recession is excluded.

What is the official explanation?

There is no official narrative. No agency has commented, no report number is attached to the sighting, and the recording exists only as a Reddit post made on 27 October 2026, the day after the stated event.

South Point has no weather reporting station of its own. The nearest automated stations are at Kona and Hilo, both more than 80 km away and on different coasts of a 4,000 m volcanic island, and their readings on the afternoon of 26 October 2026 run from 4 to 8 knots. Those figures are not transferable to Ka Lae, which is a famously windy headland, so this archive records the local wind at the time as unmeasured rather than borrowing numbers from a different microclimate.

What did the witnesses think it was?

The thread read the object as a kite almost immediately and nearly unanimously, and the most specific comment is the one worth quoting. A commenter who says they camp at South Point regularly described the local practice directly: "Its a kite used to take a fishing line off shore for deep sea fishing from shore. I camp down there a lot and see people use Trash bags, fill them with air and tie them shut. The wind will pick up the bag and carry it well off shore. The water gets deep fast out there. You can catch bigger fish if you get your line a couple hundred yards off shore."

Several others independently offered kite or balloon, one noted that South Point is very windy and therefore good for kites, and one raised a drone at digital zoom.

The witness pushed back on two grounds: that there is no beach there, and that the person visible at the start of the clip had only just arrived. Another commenter answered the second point by observing that two people are visible at the beginning. The first point is fair as far as it goes, because Ka Lae is a cliffed headland rather than a beach, and it is also the location where shore fishermen work from the rocks.

Is the A Dark Four-Cornered Object Filmed over South Point, Hawaii on 26 October 2026 real? The two-pass assessment

Pass one, how could this be mundane. The enlarged frames answer it. At 35 seconds the object resolves into a quadrilateral with four distinct corners, concave edges and a visibly bowed surface, which is the silhouette of a flat sail under tension. At 18 seconds, at the largest measured area, the same object shows a billowing form with slack fabric and a lighter band across the middle. The measurements agree with the pictures: an area that swings 41.6 times over, and 7 times inside one second, at constant contrast, is a flexible surface presenting different faces to the camera, not a solid object moving in range.

Put that together with the place. Ka Lae is the windiest point on the island, and the thread contains a first-hand description of a specific local practice, kite fishing, in which a kite or an inflated bag carries a line several hundred yards offshore. This archive therefore treats a kite as the strongly supported reading.

Two honest limits belong on the page. No tether line is visible anywhere in the footage, which is the witness's own objection, although monofilament against a bright overcast at this resolution and this distance would not be expected to register. And the witness's report of four orange glowing lights is not reproduced in the frames this archive measured, where the object is a dark silhouette throughout, so that detail is neither confirmed nor explained.

Pass two, if it is not that. The footage does not contain the information needed to put the object at a known distance, so no size, speed or altitude can be derived, and nothing in it supports an exotic reading. What can be said is narrow and firm: a real, opaque, flat, flexible four-cornered body, turning in a strong wind, over the windiest headland in Hawaii.

The tier is Strongly Disputed rather than Discredited, following the Campo Largo and Spring Hill precedent. The witness filmed something real, posted it the next day with a date, a time and a place, answered questions in the thread, and volunteered detail that worked against their own case. An honest reporter plus genuine footage plus a probable misidentification is not a hoax.
