Changing Lights Reported from Mather Airfield toward Folsom, California on 16 October 2026

Mather Airfield, Rancho Cordova, Sacramento County, California  ·  16 October 2026  ·  Nocturnal lights / multiple witness video · United States

Computed from the JPL Horizons solar position for Mather Airfield at the reported minute. Each curve gives the lowest altitude that is still in sunlight along a given look direction. Starlink at about 550 km crosses the northeast curve near 9 degrees of elevation, so above that height in the sky a flare was not physically available. (Data plot by UAP Globe from JPL Horizons ephemeris. This is a computation, not a photograph of the sighting.)

The thread settled on Starlink flares. The geometry says that answer is available only if the lights were within about 9 degrees of the horizon, which puts them roughly 1,900 km away rather than over the next county.

What did witnesses see at Mather Airfield?

Eight workers on the night shift at Mather Airfield in Rancho Cordova reported a group of changing lights to the northeast. The filing gives the time as 4:07 AM Pacific on Friday 16 October 2026, a duration of about four minutes, and an observer facing northeast, toward Folsom and El Dorado Hills.

The report was filed through the structured form at ufosighting.report, which assigned it number 13197, and relayed to r/UFOs by the site's bot on 27 October. The reporter, posting as u/Chicobongo925, confirmed the submission from their own Reddit account, and describes themselves as an aircraft mechanic working the 0100 to 0900 shift at the field.

Their account of the behaviour is specific: "When we noticed the lights they were in a triangle formation and two of the lights went away and then came back and then moved into an Orions Belt kind of straight line and then back to a triangle then some of the lights disappeared again and then it looked like two or three lights came out from one of the other lights."

The filing records 5 or more objects, shape changing, movement unpredictable and erratic, apparent size a pea at arm's length, and closest distance a few miles. On the five observables it answers No to wings, rotors, exhaust plume and noise, and Yes to sudden extreme acceleration, to hard to observe clearly, and to flight without visible means of lift.

The reporter's stated reason for treating it as unusual is occupational: "We work at the airport everyday from 1am to 9am so we're all very familiar with checking flight radar regularly to track our incoming aircraft. So when we saw these lights we realized that we didn't have any aircraft inbound so we checked flight radar and didn't see anything over that area."

The attached video is 1 minute 42 seconds and is extremely hard to read. The frames show the lit airfield apron across the bottom, a band of distant city lights along the horizon, lens flare in several frames, and a very dark sky in which only faint points are present. One commenter put it plainly and this archive agrees: "I can't see much in the video, honestly."

What is the official explanation?

There is no official narrative. Nothing has been said by any agency, and the only structured material is the filing itself.

The filing carries an automatically generated sky-context block listing satellites computed from a 2026-10-16 catalogue as overhead at the time: COSMOS 2219 at 38 degrees above ENE, SL-8 R/B at 34 degrees above ESE, COSMOS 2278 at 24 degrees above ENE, MIDORI II at 22 degrees above NNE, SL-16 R/B at 19 degrees above SE, and AQUA at 18 degrees above ESE. None of those is a Starlink satellite, and this archive treats such blocks as leads rather than findings, for reasons recorded on other cases where they pointed the wrong way.

What did the witnesses think it was?

The thread's own analysis is unusually good and is the reason this case was worth building. A commenter, b407driver, computed that at the reported time the Sun was about 35 degrees below the horizon at azimuth 073, noted that the witness was facing northeast, observed that Starlink satellites flare when the Sun sits 30 to 40 degrees below the horizon, and concluded Starlink flares at roughly 95 per cent confidence. They also made a fair criticism of the reporting form, which asks for a great deal and never asks for the object's elevation above the horizon.

The reporter engaged with that rather than resisting it, accepted the correction between solar flares and satellite flares, and then raised the one objection that the satellite reading has to answer: "that direction of the video we're facing is our approach path so I'm staring in that direction all the time and I have never seen anything like that before. Are you saying I should see that regularly?"

Other commenters offered drones, and one offered more Starlink satellites.

Is the Changing Lights Reported from Mather Airfield toward Folsom, California on 16 October 2026 real? The two-pass assessment

Pass one, how could this be mundane. The satellite hypothesis is the one on the table, and it is testable rather than arguable.

JPL Horizons for the airfield at 11:05 UTC on 16 October 2026 puts the Sun at azimuth 68.92 and elevation minus 37.49, which confirms the commenter's figures closely. Because that azimuth sits inside the quadrant the witnesses were facing, the usual zenith shadow cutoff is meaningless here and only a directional computation means anything. Placing a satellite along each look direction and testing it against Earth's cylindrical shadow gives the lowest altitude that is still sunlit: looking northeast, 481 km at 5 degrees elevation, 567 km at 10 degrees, 646 km at 15, 719 km at 20 and 850 km at 30.

Starlink's operational shell is about 550 km. So the result is a threshold, not a verdict: toward the northeast, a Starlink satellite was in sunlight only below about 9 degrees of elevation, and above that it was inside Earth's shadow and could not have flared at all.

Two things follow. First, the launch check supports the possibility at low elevation, because Starlink Group 15-25 launched on 13 October 2026, three and a half days before the sighting, so a fresh group was in orbit. Second, the geometry carries a cost that nobody in the thread raised. A 550 km object seen at 9 degrees of elevation is about 1,885 km away, and its ground position is roughly 1,735 km from the observer, which is over the Rocky Mountain states. Folsom is about 30 km from Mather Airfield and El Dorado Hills about 37 km. The satellite reading and the filing's own stated distance of a few miles differ by a factor of several hundred.

That is not fatal to the satellite reading, because a witness's distance estimate for an unfamiliar light in a dark sky is close to worthless and the filing is honest that the objects were hard to observe clearly. It does mean that the satellite answer requires the lights to have been very low on the horizon, and the form never recorded whether they were.

The planets do not account for it. At the same moment Jupiter stood at azimuth 86.7 and elevation 19.9 at magnitude minus 1.93, and Mars at azimuth 90.0 and elevation 31.3 at magnitude plus 0.98, both to the east. Those are two fixed points, not five or more lights rearranging themselves, and the Moon, Venus and Saturn were either below the horizon or in the wrong part of the sky.

Pass two, if it is not that. The behaviour as described, a triangle becoming a line and returning to a triangle, lights going out and coming back, and lights separating from other lights, is not satellite behaviour and is not aircraft behaviour either. It is, however, exactly what a group of point sources looks like when some of them are near the threshold of visibility and the eye is reorganising them, which is why the elevation measurement matters so much and why its absence is the whole problem.

The tier is Disputed. There is a specific prosaic candidate with a real launch behind it and a narrow window in which it works, the footage cannot confirm or refute it, and the single measurement that would settle the case was never taken. The check that would close it is a historical satellite pass reconstruction for the minute, run against the elevation the witnesses can still supply from memory of where the lights sat relative to the horizon.
