The witness raised searchlights as the likely answer before anyone else could. Four weather stations around London say there was nothing up there for a searchlight to paint.
What did witnesses see at Hendon?
Two people in Hendon watched lights move over north west London for about half an hour. They filmed it, and the footage turns out to be testable in ways most night sky clips are not: five or more objects, two witnesses, thirty minutes.
The structured filing describes the objects as a formation, apparent size of a basketball at arm's length, distance given as above the trees, movement recorded as "floating around, circular, random, smooth, abrupt changes in direction", duration thirty minutes, two witnesses, recorded on an iPhone 16 Pro Max. Three video files and five photographs were filed. Coordinates are given as 51.56 by minus 0.29, which the reporting platform notes it randomised to within about five kilometres at the reporter's request, so the pin on this page is the neighbourhood and not the garden.
The best of the footage is a 45 second file at 3840 by 2160. It shows a treeline and a garden fence in silhouette against a sky that is not fully dark, and in the upper part of the frame there are several soft, round, low contrast luminous patches. They are diffuse rather than sharp, and they sit in a loose diagonal arrangement that changes over the clip.
The archive tested whether those patches are real or simply sensor noise in a very dark file, because at this exposure that is a genuine question. The per pixel temporal noise in the sky region measures 2.10 grey levels, while the low frequency brightness field has an amplitude of 4.35 to 11.47 grey levels and correlates at 0.975 between frames eighteen seconds apart. The structure is real and well above the noise floor. The camera was close to static across that interval, so this test establishes that the brightness structure is genuine, not that the patches are distant objects.
A second measurement sets a hard limit on everything else. Taking the median of the background subtracted frames across the clip gives a peak of 1.65 grey levels against that 2.10 noise floor, which means there is no persistent point source anywhere in the field. No star is resolvable. Without a fixed reference there is no plate scale, so no angular rate can be recovered from this footage, and the question of whether the lights moved like satellites or like aircraft cannot be answered from the file at all.
What is the official explanation?
No official body has commented. What the archive can supply is the state of that sky, from primary sources, and it is more decisive than usual.
The recordings carry their own timestamps, from two independent places. The container creation times on two of the filed videos read 19:01:30 and 19:03:08 UTC on 17 September 2026. One of those files is a screen recording of a video call, and the phone's own status bar is burned into the frame reading 20:01 and 20:03. British Summer Time is one hour ahead of UTC, so the device clock and the file metadata agree exactly, and both put the recording at about 20:02 local, roughly six to eight minutes after the 19:55 start time the reporter stated. The filing's own account of when this happened is independently corroborated.
That call recording is not published here and will not be. It shows the face of a private individual who is not the reporter and who has not filed anything, and no public interest is served by putting it on a public archive. Its value to this case is the clock in the corner, and the clock is reported above.

At Heathrow, Luton and London City the sky was reported NCD, no cloud detected, at every hourly observation from 17:50 through 21:50 UTC. At Northolt, the closest station to Hendon, the readings were NCD either side of a single FEW at 7,300 feet at 19:50 UTC. Visibility was reported at the maximum value in the dataset at all four stations throughout.

What did the witnesses think it was?
The reporter's own reasoning is unusually good and deserves to be quoted rather than paraphrased. Asked why the sighting was not a common object, they wrote that there were "multiple lights moving relative to one another, then forming an aligned pattern and changing formation", that the objects were silent, that no aircraft structure or ground beam was visible, and that the movement "didn't resemble stars, satellites or normal aircraft". Then they added, unprompted: "I'm aware that searchlights are a possible explanation, but I couldn't identify a source and the behaviour looked different from the event lighting I..." The filing truncates there.
A witness who names the most likely prosaic explanation for their own sighting, and says why they are not satisfied by it, is behaving like an honest reporter. It also happens that they picked the right candidate to worry about, because soft round patches drifting over a city at night are the classic appearance of searchlight heads on a cloud layer, and this archive has resolved earlier cases exactly that way.

Pass one, how this could be mundane.
Searchlights are the first candidate, the witness raised it themselves, and the weather record removes it. A searchlight beam is invisible without something to scatter off; the patches it produces are the beam head painted on a cloud deck. Four stations around London reported no cloud detected across the entire evening, with a single FEW layer at 7,300 feet at one station at one observation. There was no screen to paint on. Whatever the witnesses filmed, it was not beams on cloud.
That leaves the sky itself, and the illumination geometry is emphatic. At the moment of recording the Sun was 8.32 degrees below the horizon, which is late civil twilight, the single best window in the whole night for seeing satellites. The shadow height straight overhead at that depression is only about 68 kilometres, so effectively every artificial satellite above the atmosphere was in full sunlight, in a sky with no cloud in it. Multiple bright moving points drifting and appearing to change their relative arrangement, silent, with no visible structure, is what a twilight sky full of sunlit satellites looks like to two people watching it for half an hour.
Aircraft are equally available. Hendon sits under some of the busiest approach and holding airspace in Europe, and the witnesses describe objects at a basketball's apparent size that were silent, which at altitude is unremarkable.
The strongest objection to both is the reported "abrupt changes in direction", which neither satellites nor airliners do. But the objects in the released footage are soft diffuse discs rather than points, which is what a defocused point source looks like on a phone at digital zoom at night, and apparent abrupt motion is exactly what handheld framing produces when there is nothing fixed in the field to judge against. The archive measured that there is nothing fixed in the field: no star is resolvable anywhere in the 4K clip. The one measurement that could have separated a satellite from an aircraft from something else, the angular rate, is not recoverable.
Two candidates are removed outright. Venus and Jupiter were both below the horizon at the time and cannot be any of these lights. The Moon was a crescent low in the south southwest and is a single object, not five.
Pass two, if the witnesses saw what they describe.
Then five or more silent luminous objects manoeuvred in a cloudless sky over a London suburb for half an hour, holding relative positions, aligning into a pattern and breaking it again, in front of two people who filmed them and who had already thought their way past the obvious explanation.
The archive tiers this Unknown. The searchlight answer, the one the witness themselves feared, is ruled out by the cloud record. The satellite answer is strongly supported by the illumination geometry and is not proven, because the footage cannot yield an angular rate and no specific pass has been matched. Both statements are firmer than this archive can usually make on a night lights case, and neither of them closes it.
