The Lights Beside Venus Over Echuca West, Victoria, 17 September 2026
The witness watched three lights beside Venus dim out and vanish. The geometry of that evening says the satellite answer was available, and the usual test for it gives the wrong result here.
What did witnesses see at Echuca West?
A resident of Echuca West stepped outside for firewood at about 9:20 in the evening and looked, as they say they always do, at Venus. Three more lights were sitting beside it in formation.
The witness account, filed through a structured reporting form and relayed to Reddit by a verified account, describes the three as stationary, and says the top two "disappeared. Not instantly but dimmed out fast." A sky tracking application did not list them. The witness then switched to the camera and recorded what they describe as further moving, star like objects. The filing records four objects in total, sphere shaped, apparent size of a pea at arm's length, distance given as "as high as a plane", duration twenty minutes, one witness, recorded on an iPhone 16 Pro Max, observer facing west.
Two video files were filed. The longer runs 96 seconds at 1080 by 1920. Against an almost entirely black frame it resolves a bright elongated luminous form with distinct green and white components, and separately a small red point. The archive found these by background subtraction rather than by eye, because at normal exposure the frames are close to featureless black.
One thing must be said clearly, because the witness said it first and it would be dishonest to bury it. The still image attached to the filing is not a photograph of the objects. The witness states plainly that it is edited, made to convey what they saw because they could not photograph the first three lights in time. It is a reconstruction and it is not evidence.
What is the official explanation?
There is no official narrative. No Australian agency has commented, no local outlet has covered it, and the sighting exists as a structured filing, two video files and a Reddit thread.
What is available instead is the physical state of that sky, which this archive reconstructed from primary sources.
Using the JPL Horizons system for the reported location and time, 17 September 2026 at 11:20 UTC, which is 21:20 local: Venus stood at azimuth 248.9 and elevation 1.97 degrees, meaning it was two degrees above the horizon in the west southwest and setting, and it dropped below the horizon by about 11:40 UTC. The Sun was 37.1 degrees below the horizon at azimuth 240.4. Jupiter was far below the horizon at minus 66.8 degrees. The Moon was up in the west at azimuth 260.2 and elevation 34.7, a crescent at magnitude minus 9.4.
So the witness's reference object was real, it was where they said it was, and it was very low. An object at two degrees elevation is seen through several air masses, which is the band in which point sources scintillate most violently in colour. That is directly relevant to the green and white and red components the video resolves.
What did the witnesses think it was?
The reporter is verified in the sense the reporting platform allows: the filing was confirmed from their own Reddit account through a one time link, so the person who filed it is the person who says they saw it. Their account is careful in ways that count in their favour. They flag the still image as edited rather than passing it off, they checked a sky application before filming, they describe the disappearance as a fast dimming rather than an instant vanishing, and they give a duration and a facing direction.
The archive could not recover a capture timestamp from either video. The shorter file carries a creation time of 02:54 UTC on 18 September, which is about 12:54 the following afternoon local, so it is a re-export rather than the moment of recording. The longer file has had its container rewritten by the hosting archive and carries no camera timestamp at all, which is the documented behaviour of that service. The time of the sighting therefore rests on the reporter's own statement and nothing corroborates it independently.

Pass one, how this could be mundane.
The detail that does the most work is the one the witness offered without prompting: lights that "dimmed out fast" rather than vanishing. That is the signature of a satellite passing into the Earth's shadow, which fades over seconds rather than switching off.
The obvious objection is that the Sun was 37 degrees below the horizon, which is far too deep for satellite spotting. Run the standard test and it appears to settle the matter: with a solar depression of 37.1 degrees the shadow height straight overhead is about 1,620 kilometres, which puts the entire low Earth orbit population deep in darkness.
That test is the wrong one here, and the reason is the witness's own facing. The Sun's azimuth was 240.4 and the witness was looking at Venus at azimuth 249, facing west. The observer was looking almost directly at the sunward horizon, which is the one direction in which the overhead figure says nothing. Recomputed along the actual line of sight, the minimum altitude at which an object was still in sunlight was about 392 kilometres at 2 degrees elevation, 447 kilometres at 5 degrees, 531 kilometres at 10 degrees and 679 kilometres at 20 degrees. The Starlink shell sits at roughly 550 kilometres. Satellites low in the west southwest were sunlit that evening up to somewhere above ten degrees elevation, and they would have faded out as they climbed or tracked away from the sunward quadrant.
That is a clean fit to the reported behaviour: bright objects low in the west near a setting Venus, apparently stationary to an observer watching briefly, fading rather than blinking out as they crossed into shadow. The sky tracking application not listing them is not an objection, since those applications generally plot stars and planets rather than satellites.
Two things argue the other way. There was no Starlink launch in the eleven days before the sighting, the most recent being Starlink Group 15-24 on 6 September 2026, so a tight, freshly deployed train is less likely than scattered individual passes. And the witness describes the first three lights as stationary and in formation, which fits satellites poorly unless they were near the start of a pass and observed only briefly.
The bright form in the video is a separate question from the three that dimmed. It shows green and white components together, which is consistent with an aircraft's navigation and strobe lights, and equally consistent with violent chromatic scintillation of a very low, very bright point source, which at two degrees elevation is exactly what Venus itself does. The archive cannot separate those two readings from this footage, and does not pretend to.
Pass two, if the objects were not satellites, aircraft or a scintillating planet.
Then four self luminous spherical objects held station beside a setting Venus, two of them faded out together, and others moved afterwards, over twenty minutes, in front of one witness who was looking at that part of the sky out of habit.
The archive tiers this Disputed. The prosaic explanation is not merely available, it is specific, it is quantified, and it accounts for the single most distinctive thing the witness reported. It is not proven, because no satellite pass has been matched to the minute and the recording carries no timestamp to match one against.
The method note matters beyond this case. The overhead shadow test would have killed the satellite answer outright, and it would have been wrong, because the witness was facing the sunward horizon. When the Sun's azimuth and the witness's facing fall within about a quadrant of each other, the overhead number is meaningless and the directional calculation has to be run instead.
