A Townsville resident posted a 24 second phone video to r/UFOs showing what they described as multiple orbs around Venus, one of them arcing around the planet and reversing direction. They said a family member roughly 30 km away, on the phone with them at the time, saw the same thing. No agency has commented, no second recording has surfaced, and the case rests entirely on one clip and one account.

What did witnesses see at Townsville?

The whole primary record is a single Reddit submission to r/UFOs titled "Orbs sighted over Townsville, QLD, Australia." posted by the account No-Counter7697, permalink reddit.com/r/UFOs/comments/1v6p2q6/, with a creation timestamp of 00:49 UTC on 26 July 2026. Attached to it is a 24 second video hosted natively on Reddit rather than linked in from elsewhere. That detail is worth stating plainly, because a native upload means the clip entered the public record through the same account that wrote the description, which is a different provenance situation from the usual r/UFOs pattern of a recycled clip with a fresh caption bolted on.

The poster front-loads the particulars, which is unusual and to their credit. Their words: "Time: July 26 at 8:30PM. Location: Townsville, QLD, Australia. Spotted multiple orbs around Venus tonight. The video shows one orb changing direction and appearing to arc around Venus. There was nothing showing on FlightRadar24 or any satellite trackers. I was on the phone with a family member about 30 km away who saw the same thing. The orbs would appear and disappear, change direction, va" The captured body text breaks off mid-word at that last clause, so whatever the poster was going on to say about variation is incomplete in the record.

Stripped down, there are five behavioural claims here and they should be kept separate rather than blurred into one impression. One, there were multiple objects, not a single light. Two, they were positioned around Venus, which the poster used as a fixed reference rather than as the object of interest. Three, at least one of them changed direction and appeared to arc around Venus, an angular path rather than a straight transit. Four, they appeared and disappeared, which is a visibility claim and not a movement claim. Five, they were not present on FlightRadar24 or on satellite trackers the poster checked at the time.

The sixth claim is the one that carries all the analytical weight, and it is a claim about a person rather than about the sky. The poster says they were on the phone with a family member about 30 km away who saw the same thing while the call was live. That is the single feature that would separate this from a camera problem or a backyard drone, because 30 km of baseline forces real altitude. It is also, as of this writing, entirely the poster's word. The second observer has not posted under their own name, has not been identified, and has produced no footage of their own.

What is the official explanation?

There is no official narrative. As of the time this file was compiled, no statement has been issued about this sighting by the Australian Space Agency, the Royal Australian Air Force, the Queensland Police Service, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, or Airservices Australia, and no Queensland outlet has covered it. That is normal for a Reddit report a few hours old and should not be read as an agency declining to comment. It does mean the case currently has no institutional counterweight in either direction.

The absence is worth measuring against how loudly the same agencies had been speaking about the sky over this exact stretch of North Queensland three weeks earlier. Between 3 and 5 July 2026, six metallic spheres roughly twice the size of a basketball washed up at Forrest Beach, about a hundred kilometres up the coast from Townsville. Queensland Fire and Rescue, Queensland Police and the Australian Space Agency responded, a 50 metre exclusion zone was thrown around the objects and they were secured in drums. On 6 July the Australian Space Agency stated that "The recovered objects appear to be pressure vessels [that held fuel] from a space launch vehicle" and that "The objects' location and characteristics are consistent with debris from a foreign rocket body that recently re-entered the atmosphere from orbit." Space archaeologist Alice Gorman explained why such components survive: "These parts of the fuel system often survive because their melting points are higher than the temperature coming back through the atmosphere." So the relevant agency does speak about anomalous objects in this region, promptly and with detail, when it has something to say.

The poster's FlightRadar24 check deserves an honest reading rather than either dismissal or inflation. FlightRadar24 is a crowd-fed ADS-B aggregator, not an official air traffic record. It is a reasonable first-pass filter and it is meaningful that a witness bothered to run it, but a null result there does not exclude aircraft and does not exclude drones at all. Consumer drones broadcast no ADS-B whatsoever, and military traffic is routinely filtered or non-broadcasting. That is not a hypothetical concern here: Townsville's airfield, YBTL, is a joint-use civilian and defence facility, with the civil terminal and RAAF Base Townsville sharing the same field at 19 degrees 15 minutes south, 146 degrees 46 minutes east.

For historical context on what an official response used to look like in this district, Queensland State Archives holds file ITM373641, Unidentified Flying Objects, containing police correspondence and investigation reports from the 1950s and 1960s across North Queensland, with RAAF officers including Flight Lieutenant Darby and Pilot Officer Stewart named in the paperwork and RAAF Townsville coordinating. The file includes a 24 June 1965 Townsville entry in which a "strange figure" lodged in a crevice on Castle Hill was reached by rope descent and turned out to be an empty Foster's lager carton. That is the standard this archive would like applied to the present case: someone goes and looks, and the finding is written down either way.

What did the witnesses think it was?

The witness is a single Reddit account, No-Counter7697, with no public identity, no sighting history in the archive and no prior UAP posting record that can be traced. That is a real limitation and it is stated here rather than buried. What can be assessed is how the person wrote, and the writing is more disciplined than the r/UFOs average. They gave a time, a place, a duration of observation implied by the clip, a description of specific behaviour, and a negative check they had run themselves. They did not claim a craft. They did not claim structure, hull, windows, sound, propulsion or occupants. They did not claim extraterrestrial origin. They used the word "orbs" descriptively for luminous points and left the interpretation open.

One detail cuts against the most obvious dismissal. A person who has mistaken Venus itself for a UFO does not use Venus as their fixed reference point. This witness named Venus, correctly identified it as the brightest thing in that part of the sky, and described other objects moving relative to it. That is the behaviour of someone with at least basic sky literacy, and it means the standard Venus misidentification, the one NASA's own skywatching guidance calls out when it says "Venus is one of the most confused objects in the sky, especially when it is low to the horizon", does not straightforwardly apply. It would explain apparent motion of Venus. It does not explain reported additional objects.

The corroborating witness is a family member, unnamed, described as being about 30 km from the poster and on the phone at the moment of the sighting, who is said to have seen the same thing. This archive weighs that as what it is: a second-hand report of a first-hand observation, currently uncorroborated by the person who made it. It is not nothing. A witness who wanted to inflate a story has easier moves available than inventing a specific separation distance that invites geometric checking. But until that second observer speaks in their own words, or produces their own recording, the honest count is one witness and one camera, with a claim of a second witness attached.

No local investigator, astronomy club, or civilian analysis group has published on the clip. No frame-by-frame has been done by anyone independent. Nobody has yet asked the poster the questions that would settle most of this in ten minutes: what phone, what zoom level, was the camera braced, and can the second observer describe their own bearing and elevation without being told the first observer's.

Is the Orbs Around Venus Over Townsville, Queensland real? The two-pass assessment

Pass one, how this could be entirely ordinary. The front-runner is not exotic at all: it is the camera. At 8:30 PM local in late July, Venus sits well down in the western sky from Townsville. Astronomy.com's July 2026 observing notes put Venus around 20 degrees high half an hour after sunset early in the month, tracking east through Leo toward the Leo and Virgo border by 31 July, brightening to magnitude minus 4.3 by month's end with its disc swelling from 16 to 21 arcseconds. An independent ephemeris computed for 26 July 2026 gives magnitude minus 4.19, 19.8 arcseconds across, in Leo, 0.85 AU out, with greatest eastern elongation still ahead on 14 August. Add the Moon, which on 26 July 2026 was a 12 day old waxing gibbous at 94 percent illumination heading for full on 29 July. That is two extremely bright sources in one evening sky. Point a phone at a magnitude minus 4 object low in the west, push the digital zoom, and internal reflections between lens elements and the sensor cover glass generate ghost images that sit displaced from the real source through the optical axis. When the hand shakes or the phone pans, those ghosts sweep in arcs around the bright source and blink in and out as the source crosses element boundaries. That mechanism predicts every single reported behaviour with no further assumptions: multiple points, positioned around Venus specifically, arcing around it, changing direction, appearing and disappearing. NASA's skywatching guidance lists exactly this category, "artifacts from photographs that are actually lens flare or aberration", alongside its note that "When bright planets are in alignment near the horizon they can appear to be a formation of 'strange lights'!"

The second ordinary candidate is a drone or drones. The FlightRadar24 null result is precisely what a consumer drone produces, since it broadcasts no ADS-B. Lights that hold, drift, reverse and vanish at a few hundred metres over a coastal city fit small multirotors well. Third, aircraft: YBTL is a joint civil and defence field, landing lights on final approach look like a motionless bright orb that snaps out when the aircraft banks, and military movements are frequently absent from public trackers. Fourth, satellites. Starlink 17-51 lifted from Space Launch Complex 4E at Vandenberg on 25 July 2026 at 1551 UTC carrying 24 V2 Mini satellites into a 97 degree orbit at roughly 160 by 168 miles. A 97 degree inclination train passes over every latitude, including 19 degrees south, and fresh trains are at their brightest for the first few days. Whether this is even a candidate depends entirely on which night the sighting happened, which is the reason the timestamp discrepancy matters: if the evening of 26 July AEST, the train was about 19 hours old and prime; if the evening of 25 July AEST, the rocket had not launched yet. Either way a Starlink train moves in a straight line at a steady rate and does not arc around a fixed point or reverse. Fifth, re-entry. This coast had a documented uncontrolled re-entry that month, and rocket plume events do produce spectacular sky displays, as the Philippine Space Agency documented in its advisory on the 11 April 2026 "space jellyfish" caused by a Jielong-3 launched from the South China Sea at 7:32 PM, with the plume "directly illuminated by sunlight while observers on the ground remain in darkness". No launch is on the schedule for 26 July 2026 that would put a plume over the Coral Sea, and in any case plumes and debris trails last seconds to a couple of minutes and do not hover. Sixth, meteors. The Southern Delta Aquariids were active, favour the Southern Hemisphere, and peak on 30 July 2026, but meteors are one second streaks, not orbs that change direction.

Pass two, if this is real. Everything turns on one number: 30 kilometres. A camera artifact cannot appear in two people's eyes 30 km apart. A drone at a few hundred metres cannot be seen by both. If two observers separated by that baseline genuinely watched the same objects at the same moment near the same patch of western sky, the objects were high, large, or both, and none of the pass one explanations survive. That is the whole case, and it is also the part that is currently unverified. It is the poster's assertion about someone else. The archive's position is that this claim raises the case's ceiling considerably and raises its floor not at all, and it will stay that way until the second observer gives their own account, ideally including their own bearing and elevation stated independently.

Tier is Unknown, and that is the correct tier rather than a placeholder. No official body has issued a narrative to accept or reject. No independent analyst has published a method-shown examination of the footage, so there is no dispute on the table to weigh, which rules out both disputed tiers. Nothing has been authenticated by anyone, which rules out Verified Unexplained. What exists is a 24 second native upload, a coherent and self-limiting witness statement, a negative tracker check that is weaker than the witness thinks it is, and a corroboration claim that would be decisive if it were confirmed and is inert until it is. The single strongest ordinary explanation, optical ghosting around a magnitude minus 4 point source under a 94 percent moon, accounts for the reported behaviour completely and cheaply, and would be tested in minutes by anyone willing to examine the original file rather than a re-encode. This case stands on its footage and its witnesses, and both are currently one deep.
