Nice at 21:44 and Trepalle at 21:45, one minute apart and 384 kilometres apart. Nothing flying low over a village does that. Something 350 kilometres up does it easily, and on the evening of 4 August 2026 something 350 kilometres up had been there for less than two hours.

What did witnesses see at Trepalle (Livigno)?

On the evening of Tuesday 4 August 2026, between roughly 21:40 and 21:55 local time, people in at least five countries walked outside, looked up and filmed the same thing, and almost none of them knew anyone else had seen it.

The best traced angle is a clip from Trepalle, a hamlet of Livigno in Lombardy at roughly 46.51 N, 10.11 E. It reached r/UFOs as post 1vfokvc at 22:06:14 UTC on 4 August, relayed by the account u/ufosightingsbot for the reporter u/_noname56, who filed it through the structured form at ufosighting.report. The title reads, verbatim, "Bright barrel-shaped object flying low and fast over the Italian Alps tonight Trepalle / Livigno area. Steady speed, highly illuminated. - Aug 4, 2026, 9:45 PM". This archive downloaded the video and went through it frame by frame. It runs 1 minute 55 seconds, 576 by 1280 portrait, shot at night. What is on the file is a green, elongated, segmented streak with a brighter head, sitting low in the frame against a black sky and holding a steady heading at a steady speed. The segmentation reads as a short dashed line rather than one solid body. There is no structure, no navigation lights, and nothing carrying sound information.

The second clip came from St. Gallen in northeastern Switzerland, roughly 47.42 N, 9.38 E, posted as 1vfm9jp at 20:37:28 UTC through the same relay for u/Random_tiger. Its title reads "Cigar-shaped glowing object moved smoothly and fast over St. Gallen, Switzerland - Aug 4, 2026, 12:00 PM". That time field is suspect and this archive will not smooth it over: the post was created at 22:37 Swiss time, so a midday sighting logged that evening sits with nothing else in the record. A commenter, u/rygelicus, put it to the reporter directly: "Aug 4 10am pacific time which is 9hrs off from cest, so 1900 cest or 7pm cest. If by 12PM you mean midnight local to you, then this works out well as a spacex launch. If by 12pm you mean noon local, not so much. So which was it, noon or midnight?" No clean answer came back. The archive's copy of that file is 54 seconds, 480 by 854, and shows a small pale elongated streak crossing a partly cloudy twilight sky above a treeline and rooflines. That is what is visible, and no more.

Sardinia turns two clips into a mass event. Casteddu On line, the Cagliari outlet, reported on 5 August 2026 under the byline of Valeria Putzolu that the sighting began in the Macomer area and then came in from witnesses across almost the whole island, with further reports from northern Italy including the province of Parma, one carrying a photograph. Witnesses described "una lunga fila di luci di colore verde", a long line of green coloured lights. The collation was credited to UFO Sardegna news, which said it had "immediatamente diffuso l'allerta attraverso il canale Telegram U.N.I. ALERT SARDEGNA". The same outlet had already run a reader video on 4 August from Selargius, near Cagliari at roughly 39.26 N, 9.17 E, showing a green object moving among cloud.

The cross-border corroboration arrived in the comment threads within hours. Under the Trepalle post, u/Suspicious-Nail-8731 wrote "I saw it at Nice in France at 9h44 pm !" Under the St. Gallen post, u/Golemfrost wrote "Saw the same thing about an hour ago near Ruhpolding, Germany. I've got a video that looks pretty much exactly like yours." u/g00dfellas19 added "Saw it in Tuscany!" and u/Competitive_Fruit298 noted "Someone else from Switzerland uploaded a video in another thread here an hour ago. Also seen in France and Germany."

That Nice timing is the most important number on this page. Nice at 21:44 and Trepalle at 21:45 are one minute apart, and the two towns are 384 kilometres apart by great circle. Nothing flying low over a village can be at two places 384 kilometres apart within a minute. Either two unrelated objects appeared at the same minute in two countries, or the thing being filmed was high enough that both observers saw one object from opposite ends of a very long baseline. The second reading also covers Ruhpolding, Tuscany, Corsica, Palermo and Selargius, and Selargius to Ruhpolding is 984 kilometres.

What is the official explanation?

No government, air force or civil aviation authority opened an inquiry, and none is likely to. There is no official file in the sense this archive usually means the phrase. What exists instead is an unusually complete documentary record of the candidate cause, published by the launch operator, the press and the orbital element catalogues within hours of the sighting.

At 17:05:03 UTC on 4 August 2026, which is 10:05 a.m. PDT, SpaceX launched Starlink 17-53 from Space Launch Complex 4 East at Vandenberg Space Force Base. Spaceflight Now's live coverage records that "Liftoff from Space Launch Complex 4 East occurred at 10:05 a.m. PDT (1:05 p.m. EDT / 1705 UTC)", that the flight carried 24 broadband satellites into a constellation "consisting of more than 10,800 satellites", and that "Nearly 8.5 minutes after liftoff, B1063 landed on the droneship, Of Course I Still Love You, positioned in the Pacific Ocean". Its launch schedule gives the same time to the second and notes the flight had slipped from 1, 2 and 3 August. Spacelaunchschedule.com independently lists 4 August 2026 at 5:05 PM UTC, SLC-4E, booster B1063 on its 34th flight, 24 satellites, payload deployed roughly one hour after liftoff. Three days earlier, at 03:08 UTC on 1 August, the same pad flew Starlink 17-52, another 24 satellites on booster B1081.

A correction belongs in the record, because the Italian coverage carried an error that inverted the timeline. The Giornale di Sicilia, reporting from Palermo on 5 August under the byline of Giovanni Villino, gave the launch as "19:05:03 utc del 4 agosto 2026" and "le 21:05 in Italia", and those figures propagated through other outlets. The seconds match exactly, so it is plainly the same flight, but the time zone label is wrong by two hours: 19:05:03 was the launch time in Italy, not in UTC. As printed, the launch appeared to have happened after the sightings began, which is not what occurred. The Reddit commenter u/rygelicus, working from "10am pacific time which is 9hrs off from cest", got it right where the newspapers did not.

The Italian science press separated two events social media was conflating. Geopop, in a piece by Alessandra Lanza on 5 August 2026, treated Monday 3 August and Tuesday 4 August as different phenomena. The 3 August event, at about 22:59, was a very bright meteor seen from Lombardy to Sicily, logged by the PRISMA fireball network as event 6141-2026, drawing close to 500 reports within hours and fading emerald green because of the magnesium in it. The 4 August event was a satellite train, tied to the Starlink 17-52 and 17-53 launches and described as "un trenino di luci puntiformi" moving "in linea retta con una precisione quasi innaturale", the satellites being objects that "non brillano di luce propria, ma riflettono la luce del Sole". Anyone reaching for a green meteor to explain the green lights of 4 August is reaching for the wrong night.

The Swiss coverage is the closest thing to a contemporaneous determination, and it went out while the sky was still dark. 20 Minuten ran a piece by Reto Bollmann at 22:46 on 4 August itself, reporting sightings at 21:55 from Rehetobel in Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Zizers in Graubünden, Arbon in Thurgau, and from Corsica. Rehetobel sits about 8 kilometres from St. Gallen, which independently anchors the Swiss clip to that evening rather than to noon. The outlet named the object: "Gemäss der Website Findstarlink.com war der genannte Satellit am Dienstag, 4. August, um circa 21.40 Uhr über Teilen der Schweiz während vier Minuten gut sichtbar", identifying it as Starlink-408, lead object of group G17-53. Bellunopress reported the same transit over Falcade and the Agordino valleys at around 21:42, "una luminosa carovana di punti metallici in fila indiana", lasting about four minutes at an estimated magnitude of 3.2. ForliToday covered it for Romagna under the headline "Occhi all'insù e cellulari a portata di mano: una scia di luci 'misteriose' avvistata nei cieli della Romagna".

What did the witnesses think it was?

The witnesses behaved well, and it is worth saying so plainly first. Nobody claimed a craft and nobody claimed occupants. The Trepalle reporter wrote down a shape, a direction, a speed and a time and filed it through a structured form, and the St. Gallen reporter did the same. The Sardinian witnesses told a local newspaper what they saw and let the newspaper decide what to make of it. Reporting an unfamiliar light honestly is not an error, and the Italian press handled it responsibly rather than mockingly.

What they believed, on the evidence of what they wrote, is mostly that they did not know. The Trepalle description of a "barrel-shaped object flying low and fast" is a reading of a low-elevation light with no scale reference, and it is the reading almost anyone would make. The Swiss reporter used "cigar-shaped glowing object". Casteddu On line closed its Sardinian piece with "Rimane, al momento, il mistero", the mystery remains for now, an honest position for an outlet holding a hundred unverified reports and no instrument between them and the sky.

The one thing witnesses would not accept was the satellite answer, and their reason was specific rather than vague. The objection was the colour. Casteddu On line recorded it in their own terms: "le luci apparivano di colore verde e non come il classico 'trenino' di punti luminosi bianchi normalmente associato ai satelliti". The Selargius report carried the same reservation, that this was "non è il classico trenino di luce bianca che ogni tanto si vede". These people were not unaware of Starlink. They had seen Starlink trains before, they knew what those look like, and they were saying this did not look like one.

The Reddit threads pulled the other way, and the corroborating witnesses there mostly reached the satellite conclusion themselves. u/flarkey wrote "Its the recently launched Starlink train". u/rygelicus wrote "Starlink, it's just starlink from the Aug 4 launch". u/R2robot wrote "Looks like a recently deployed Starlink train of satellites that hasn't had time to spread out yet". u/Wild-Sheepherder-958 wrote "This is a chain of starlink satellites". u/craigbg21 added that trains look "exactly like this for the first week or so until gradually spreading out to individual lights". These are not officials closing a file. They are other observers, several of whom watched the same sky, agreeing on a cause.

One commenter raised a technical objection to the St. Gallen file specifically. u/mario1973p examined it and wrote that the original video attached at ufosighting.report is 576 by 1024 and a .mov, and that "this video has been modified, this video is not the original, it has a creation date different from the one declared." That is a sourced challenge to that file's integrity and it belongs in the record. This archive could not obtain the original .mov to compare against, so the objection stands untested rather than confirmed or dismissed. It touches only the Swiss clip. It says nothing about the Trepalle footage, the Sardinian reports, the Nice observation, or the Swiss press reports from Rehetobel, Arbon and Zizers, which came through an entirely different channel.

The dispute

The counter-explanation is that every one of these reports, in all five countries, was a train of freshly launched Starlink satellites catching sunlight in deep twilight. It was advanced independently and almost immediately by three separate constituencies: by Reddit commenters under both threads, among them u/flarkey ("Its the recently launched Starlink train"), u/rygelicus ("Starlink, it's just starlink from the Aug 4 launch"), u/R2robot ("Looks like a recently deployed Starlink train of satellites that hasn't had time to spread out yet") and u/craigbg21, who noted that trains look "exactly like this for the first week or so until gradually spreading out to individual lights"; by the Italian and Swiss press on 4 and 5 August, including 20 Minuten, Bellunopress, Geopop, the Giornale di Sicilia and ForliToday; and by the Sardinian outlet Casteddu On line, which raised it while recording that its own witnesses rejected it.

The evidence behind the identification is specific and checkable. SpaceX launched Starlink 17-53, 24 v2 Mini satellites, on a Falcon 9 from Space Launch Complex 4 East at Vandenberg Space Force Base at 17:05:03 UTC on 4 August 2026, booster B1063 on its 34th flight, with deployment about an hour after liftoff. 20 Minuten, publishing at 22:46 that same evening, cited findstarlink.com to name the object as Starlink-408 of group G17-53 and put it over parts of Switzerland from about 21:40 for four minutes. Bellunopress timed the Dolomite transit independently at about 21:42, four minutes long, at an estimated magnitude of 3.2. This archive then ran its own check rather than taking any of that on trust: the 24 catalogued objects of the 4 August batch, Celestrak catalogue numbers 69975 to 69998, international designator 2026-159, inclination 97.28 degrees, mean motion about 15.75 revolutions per day, were propagated with SGP4 back into the sighting window. At 19:42 and 19:44 UTC, sunlit members of that shell stood above 10 degrees elevation simultaneously over Nice, Trepalle, Rehetobel, Arbon, Zizers, Falcade, Ruhpolding, Parma and Corsica, in the west to northwest, with the Sun 8 to 11 degrees below the local horizon. The geometry, the illumination, the direction, the duration and the brightness all match the reports.

Two caveats sit on that reconstruction and are stated here rather than buried. The catalogued element sets have epochs early on 5 August, so reaching the sighting requires back-propagating six to seven hours through a period when the batch was manoeuvring to raise its orbit, and SGP4 does not model manoeuvres, so along-track timing is uncertain by several minutes. Separately, the Starlink 17-52 batch launched at 03:08 UTC on 1 August sits in nearly the same orbital plane and was itself still low and clustered that evening, so the archive can demonstrate that a fresh Starlink train was over every reported town at the reported minute but cannot say to the second which of the two batches any given phone was pointed at. Both are the same phenomenon, so the identification survives the ambiguity.

What the explanation does not cover is the colour. Sunlit satellites are white to pale yellow. The Sardinian witnesses, reporting independently from Macomer, Selargius and towns across the island, described "una lunga fila di luci di colore verde" and said flatly it was not "il classico 'trenino' di punti luminosi bianchi normalmente associato ai satelliti", and the Trepalle clip, inspected frame by frame by this archive, is green. Against that, 20 Minuten described the Swiss object as white and Bellunopress as metallic points, while the reader photograph 20 Minuten published alongside its own white description carries a clear green cast. The colour is therefore not consistent between independent observers of a single pass, which argues it is not a property of the objects. No source this archive has opened demonstrates what in the imaging or perceptual chain produced it, so no camera-artefact mechanism is asserted here as fact. The identification of the objects is secure. The green is not explained, and that is why the Italian coverage was right to end where it did, with "Rimane, al momento, il mistero".

Is the Green Light Train Over Italy, Switzerland, France and Germany (4 August 2026) real? The two-pass assessment

Pass one. How could all of this be entirely ordinary?

It could be a freshly deployed Starlink train, and this archive checked that rather than asserting it. Starlink 17-53 lifted off at 17:05:03 UTC and deployed its 24 satellites about an hour later, which puts the European sightings at roughly 19:42 to 19:45 UTC, two hours and forty minutes after launch and about one hour and forty minutes after deployment. That is squarely inside the window in which a new batch is still a tight, undispersed string, low and bright and unfamiliar, and it is the most-reported cause of exactly this class of report worldwide.

The archive then went past the commenters and did the orbital work. Celestrak's general perturbations catalogue carries the 4 August batch as 24 objects, catalogue numbers 69975 to 69998, international designator 2026-159, inclination 97.28 degrees, mean motion about 15.75 revolutions per day, a low retrograde near-polar orbit around 350 kilometres up. Those elements were propagated with SGP4 back to that evening and combined with a solar position calculation to test geometry and illumination together. At 19:42 and 19:44 UTC, sunlit satellites of that shell stood simultaneously above 10 degrees elevation over Nice, Trepalle, Rehetobel, Arbon, Zizers, Falcade, Ruhpolding, Parma and Corsica, in the west to northwest sky between about 10 and 25 degrees, with the Sun 8 to 11 degrees below each observer's horizon. That is the geometry the reports describe: a low bright moving line in the western sky during deep twilight, seen at the same minute from towns hundreds of kilometres apart. It agrees with findstarlink.com's prediction as reported by 20 Minuten and with Bellunopress independently timing the Dolomite transit at 21:42 for four minutes at magnitude 3.2. The two limits on that reconstruction are set out in the dispute below, and neither changes the conclusion.

Everything else prosaic fails on the simultaneity. A drone, an aircraft, a flare, a lantern or a low meteor cannot be one minute apart at Nice and Trepalle across 384 kilometres, and cannot also be over Sardinia, Sicily, Corsica and Bavaria the same evening. The 3 August emerald bolide, PRISMA event 6141-2026, is a different night and a different object.

Pass two. What genuinely resists the explanation?

One thing, and it is the colour. Sunlit satellites reflect white to pale yellow light. The Sardinian witnesses, independently and across many towns, insisted on green and said explicitly this was not the white train they already knew, and the archive's own frame inspection of the Trepalle clip agrees with them. Against that, the picture is not consistent. 20 Minuten described the Swiss reports as a "strichförmiges, weiss leuchtendes Objekt", a line-shaped white glowing object, and Bellunopress called them "punti metallici". Yet the photograph 20 Minuten published with its own story, taken in Switzerland that night, shows an elongated tapered streak with a whiter head and a distinctly green cast along its body, closer to the Sardinian description than to the newspaper's own text. Across independent observers of one pass, the same objects were recorded as green, as white and as metallic. A colour that changes from camera to camera and witness to witness is not a property of the object. What in the imaging chain produced it, whether phone night modes, lens coatings, sensor response at very low signal, or how the eye handles a faint moving point in twilight, is not something this archive can assert from any source it has opened, and it will not pretend otherwise. The colour is unexplained. The object is not.

The tier is Strongly Disputed. This archive reserves that tier for a positive identification of the specific real-world cause, and a traced rocket launch is named in its rules as qualifying. Here there is a named, dated, second-precise launch, a published pass prediction naming the group, an independent orbital reconstruction confirming simultaneous sunlit visibility at every reported town at the reported minute, a duration and magnitude from the Italian press matching a satellite train, and morphology consistent with an undispersed string. That is identification, not assertion. The witnesses were not wrong to report it, the Italian press was not wrong to hesitate, and the one detail they hesitated over is the one that remains open.
