The Strange Object Over Iraq, 24 September 2026

Ash Shawmali, Babil Governorate, seen across central and southern Iraq  ·  24 September 2026  ·  Mass sighting · Iraq

A frame from the I NEWS television package on the sighting. The object is a compact bright head drawing a curved, wavy luminous train, the shape of a fireball and its persistent train rather than a solid body. The chyron reads: citizens in central and southern Iraq document the appearance of a strange object in the sky. (I NEWS (Iraq), broadcast 24 September 2026, from the reel circulated the same night.)

A luminous object filmed from several Iraqi governorates just before one in the morning was relayed to r/UFOs as a hovering cigar. Three independent clocks, the footage itself and the country’s main astronomy page all say otherwise.

What did witnesses see at Ash Shawmali?

A brilliant luminous object crossed the night sky over central and southern Iraq shortly before one in the morning on 24 September 2026. Phone cameras caught it from several governorates, and Iraqi television was carrying the footage inside the hour.

The clearest surviving record is the package broadcast by the Iraqi channel I NEWS, whose lower third read "citizens in central and southern Iraq document the appearance of a strange object in the sky". In those frames the object is not a disc and not a solid body. It is a compact bright head drawing a long, curved, slightly wavy luminous train behind it, the train brightest near the head and fading along its length. Across the broadcast the head dims and contracts while the train persists and drifts, which is the signature of an object that has stopped burning and left a column of heated material hanging in the upper air.

One of the citizen clips folded into the broadcast carries its own burned-in security camera clock. It advances through 24/09/2026 12:46:39 AM, 12:46:40 AM and 12:46:41 AM, which places the event at roughly 00:46 local time (UTC+3) on 24 September and gives the case a timestamp written at the moment of recording rather than recalled afterwards.

UAP Globe holds the broadcast reel at 1440 by 1964 and a second, differently edited aggregator repackage at 716 by 1274, both archived. The two edits carry overlapping but not identical citizen clips, so the number of separate recordings behind the story is certainly more than one and cannot be fixed precisely from the circulated versions alone.

What is the official explanation?

No Iraqi government body issued a statement on the object that this archive has been able to locate.

The identification that ended the public argument came from a private source rather than an official one. Tlskub al-Iraq (Iraq Telescope), the country's largest amateur astronomy outreach page, said the luminous object seen from most Iraqi governorates was a fireball, and that the meteoroid entered the atmosphere at extreme speed and burned at very high altitudes, producing intense light and a wavy smoke and vapour trail that remained suspended in the upper layers of the atmosphere for some time. The Iraqi outlet 964 Media published that explanation at 10:18 local time on 24 September.

Two limits belong on the record. Iraq Telescope is an astronomy outreach page, not a government agency and not an observatory network, so this is an expert reading rather than an instrumented determination, and no trajectory, entry angle or terminal altitude was published. And no meteor network solution exists for this event, because there is no dense fireball camera network over Iraq of the kind that produces orbit reconstructions elsewhere.

What did the witnesses think it was?

The event reached this archive through a structured filing on ufosighting.report, relayed to r/UFOs by that site's bot as report 13031 under the headline "Grayish cigar-shaped object hovered steadily over Ash Shawmali, Iraq". That headline is wrong in almost every particular, and the filing says as much about itself if it is read closely.

The bot comment states plainly that the submitter was relaying someone else's material, in its own words "this is not their own sighting", and it names the reported source as a Facebook reel. So there is no witness testimony in the filing at all, only a re-description of a video by somebody who was not present.

The filing's own fields then contradict each other and the footage. Its shape field reads "disk" while its headline says cigar-shaped. It reports a duration of three minutes and movement as "hovering, straight and steady", but the object in the broadcast is visibly a moving head with a decaying trail, and the security camera clock covers the bright phase in about three seconds. It records 300 witnesses, a figure with no stated basis. Its one genuinely useful line sits in the box asking why the object was not something common, where the reporter notes that others suspected a meteorite with blueish colours, which is the answer the astronomers gave a few hours later.

The thread's own readers were closer to the mark than its title. Commenters offered a leaf on a spider web, a flat objection that the object is not cigar shaped at all, and an LED paraglider. None of them defended the headline.

Is the Strange Object Over Iraq, 24 September 2026 real? The two-pass assessment

Pass one, the mundane reading. It holds, and it is well supported. A bright head trailing a curved persistent train, seen at the same moment across several hundred kilometres of one country, lasting seconds rather than minutes, is a fireball, and that is what the country's main astronomy page called it within hours. The morphology in the surviving frames matches that description independently of the astronomers: the train is wavy and it outlives the head, which is a persistent train of heated and ionised material rather than structure. Nothing in the record requires anything further.

The timeline is tight and self consistent, which is what lifts confidence here above the usual single clip sighting. The security camera clock reads 00:46 local. The I NEWS video piece carries a published timestamp of 01:45:10 local, 59 minutes later. The Facebook reel that the r/UFOs filing names as its source was uploaded at 01:46:02 local, 63 minutes after the event and one minute after the television piece. Three clocks controlled by three different parties agree on the same night and the same hour, so the footage cannot be a recycled clip attached to a fresh claim, which is the failure mode that kills most viral sightings.

Pass two, if it were not a fireball. There is very little to work with, and the honest answer is that the surviving material does not support an exotic reading. No corroborating instrument record exists, no government body commented, and the one document describing the object as a hovering cigar was written by a person who did not see it. A satellite or rocket body reentry is the nearest alternative to a natural meteoroid and cannot be excluded from the imagery alone, because a reentering upper stage produces a similar bright head and persistent train. Duration would discriminate between them, since a reentry is typically visible for a minute or more while a meteoric fireball lasts seconds, but the only figures available are the filing's unsourced three minutes and the roughly three seconds covered by the security camera clock, and those cannot both be right. A Long March 8A launched from China about nine hours earlier, so a reentry candidate existed in principle, but no published reentry prediction places any object over Iraq at 00:46 on 24 September, and this archive is not asserting one.

A note for anyone searching this event later. Iraq has had at least four widely filmed luminous object episodes in eight years, and they are routinely conflated by search engines: an object that fell near Al-Kut in Wasit in November 2018, a meteor seen from Iraq, Syria and Turkey in September 2024, a reentry of SpaceX satellite debris in May 2026, and this one. Three separate articles offered against this event during research turned out to describe the other three. Check the publication date before attaching any report to this night.

The tier reflects a real event, honestly filmed and honestly reported by the people who recorded it, that was given a name it does not deserve by a second hand filing. That is a misidentification and not a hoax, and the same treatment applies here as at Campo Largo, Spring Hill and Terrebonne.
