The Winged Figure Photographed over L'Aquila on 26 October 2026

L'Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy  ·  26 October 2026  ·  Entity / humanoid photograph · Italy

The object enlarged from the witness's first frame. It measures 239 by 147 pixels in the original file and sits 89.0 grey levels below the surrounding sky against an annulus noise of 1.12, about 121 sigma, so it is unquestionably a real object in front of the lens and not a compression artifact. The outline is two broad ragged wings raised in a shallow V above a compact rounded body, with a small bright patch near the body where the witness reported seeing two pale points.

A man walking a familiar route through L'Aquila at dusk photographed a large dark winged form among a flock of birds, sent the frames to a wildlife centre, and was told the subject could not be attributed to any species in Abruzzo. He has been careful not to claim it is anything unknown. The two frames he published measure as a flapping animal.

What did witnesses see at L'Aquila?

The sighting is dated by the witness to Monday 26 October 2026 at 17:43 local time. It happened in a residential area of L'Aquila, in the Abruzzo region of central Italy. He was on a route he has walked for years and was watching a flock of birds when he noticed a figure distinctly larger than the rest, moving slowly at some distance.

His description is detailed. The form was completely dark, silhouetted against the twilight, with two small pale points in the head area that he compared to the reflection in a cat's eyes but colder in tone. The head seemed tucked between the shoulders and the body vaguely recalled an adult human figure, while the wings appeared very large in proportion to it. The overall silhouette was black, compact and rounded, and the surface looked almost soft, as though covered in dense plumage or fur, though he says the distance and the light did not let him be sure. For a few seconds he watched it glide slowly and lose height, then regain some of it with a few slow measured wing beats, and make several apparent full rotations before repeating the pattern. He could not judge its height or size, except that it was well above the electrical cables in the area, and he noted that other birds passed nearby without reacting.

He photographed it on a Samsung Galaxy A20 and did not manage to record video, which he regrets. Two of his clearest frames were published together as a stacked composite. The upper frame shows the form against plain blue-grey sky; the lower shows it above a construction crane whose stay cables carry a long line of roosting birds, with pink banded twilight behind.

The object enlarged from the witness's second frame. The silhouette now runs taller than wide, one wing raised near vertical over the body, at an aspect of 0.81 against 1.63 in the first frame while the total dark area changes by only eleven per cent. That combination is a wing stroke rather than a rigid object changing distance or attitude.

Every earthquake of magnitude 3.0 or greater recorded within 30 km of L'Aquila over the five years to 6 November 2026, from the INGV catalogue, with the sighting and the Barete tremor marked. Ten events in five years is one per 183 days, so a tremor within three days of any chosen date has a probability of about 1.6 per cent.

What is the official explanation?

There is no official account. No agency, police force or scientific institution has commented on the sighting, and no report appears in the Italian press.

The nearest thing to an expert assessment is second hand, and the witness reports it himself. He knows someone who works at a wildlife centre in Pescara and sent the photographs there on 26 October. On 1 November at around 20:40 he received a phone call: the centre could not identify the subject and could not attribute it to a species present in Abruzzo, though it agreed that some characteristics are reminiscent of a moth. With his consent the centre asked to pass the images to a second centre for further analysis. The centre has published nothing and is not named, so this assessment reaches the record only through the witness.

He also reports being advised to release the images gradually rather than all at once, for reasons he sets out at length: preserving the originals and their metadata for any later examination, avoiding premature identification before specialist comparison, and not drawing sightseers to a location where a wild animal might be present. He is explicit about the distinction the centre drew for him, that calling a subject unidentifiable does not make it unknown to science, only that the available evidence did not support a definite identification.

What did the witnesses think it was?

The witness is unusually careful, and the page should say so plainly. He closes his own account by stating that he is not claiming to have photographed an unknown creature or anything paranormal, only sharing what he observed along with the assessment he received. He volunteers the weaknesses of his own material, including that the camera is an older model and that twilight was against him, and he offered to make the photographs' metadata public after commenters accused the images of being generated by artificial intelligence.

The Mothman comparison that has attached itself to the case did not originate with him in its strong form, although he raised the parallel himself. Three days after the sighting, on 29 October 2026, a magnitude 3.0 earthquake struck near Barete in the province of L'Aquila, and the folklore association between Mothman reports and subsequent disasters gave the coincidence a following. He states in the same breath that there is no certain evidence the two events are connected and that nothing demonstrates a relationship between the sighting and the tremor.

The thread response was largely dismissive and mostly jocular, but two readers offered serious prosaic candidates, a large Eurasian eagle owl given the region, and a moth close to the lens. One accused him of spamming the material across subreddits. He engaged with the criticism rather than avoiding it.

The dispute

Measured across the witness's own two published frames the silhouette holds its area to within eleven per cent while its aspect ratio doubles from 1.63 to 0.81, which is a wing stroke and not a rigid body. The reported wildlife-centre assessment excluding local species is second hand and unpublished, and the earthquake coincidence that drew most of the attention has a base rate of about 1.6 per cent in any three-day window.

Is the Winged Figure Photographed over L'Aquila on 26 October 2026 real? The two-pass assessment

Pass one. The frames were measured rather than eyeballed. In the upper frame the object spans 239 by 147 pixels, an area of 10,202 pixels at an aspect of 1.63, and sits 89.0 grey levels below the local sky measured against an annulus at three to five object radii, with a peak residual of 64.8 against a sky noise floor of 0.54, about 121 sigma. In the lower frame it spans 167 by 207 pixels, an area of 11,341 pixels at an aspect of 0.81, sitting 50.0 grey levels below local sky at about 56 sigma. So there is no question that a real, solid, dark object was in front of the lens on both occasions.

The decisive number is the pair of aspect ratios. Between the two frames the witness himself selected as his clearest, the silhouette holds almost the same area, 10,202 against 11,341 pixels, a difference of eleven per cent, while its aspect ratio swings from 1.63 to 0.81, a factor of two. The same amount of dark surface rearranges its outline completely. That is what a wing stroke does and it is not what a rigid body does; a receding object loses contrast as it loses area, and this one does neither. The upper frame shows two wings held wide in a shallow V, the lower shows a single wing raised near vertical above the body, which are the two ends of a flapping cycle.

The witness's own account describes the same thing in words. Slow gliding with loss of height, height regained through a few slow measured wing beats, and repeated circling is a description of soaring flight. The lower frame contains its own context, a line of birds roosting along the crane's stay cables in the same exposure, and the witness noted that birds passing near the object showed no reaction to it.

Pass two. What the measurement demonstrates is a class, a flapping winged animal, and not a species, and the archive will not name one. The reported assessment from the Pescara wildlife centre is that no species present in Abruzzo fits, which is a meaningful statement if accurate but reaches us only through the witness, unattributed and unpublished, and cannot be weighed as expert testimony in its present form. The suggestion of a moth is hard to reconcile with a form seen at distance above power cables among birds, and the owl suggestion is hard to reconcile with a reported assessment that excludes local species. The honest position is that the identification is open while the behaviour is not.

The earthquake coincidence is checkable and was checked. The Italian national seismic network confirms the event exactly: INGV event 47819782, 29 October 2026 at 20:45:23 UTC, local magnitude 3.0, at 42.4577 north and 13.3055 east, depth 11.1 km, catalogued as 2 km east of Barete, which is 14.2 km from the centre of L'Aquila. The witness's claim is accurate in magnitude, date and place. What it is not is remarkable. The same catalogue holds ten earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater within 30 km of L'Aquila in the five years to 6 November 2026, one every 183 days on average, so the chance of at least one falling in any given three-day window is about 1.6 per cent and in any given week about 3.8 per cent. Neither the window nor the magnitude threshold was specified before the fact, and five of those ten events sit in the same Barete and Pizzoli cluster northwest of the city, so the tremor happened where tremors happen. No mechanism has been proposed by anyone, including the witness.

Filed as Strongly Disputed, on the same basis as the archive's other cases of this shape. An honest reporter, genuine imagery and a misidentification is not a hoax, and nothing here suggests one. The frames are real, the measured behaviour is animal flight, and the species is undetermined. Two things would move the case: publication of the original files with their metadata intact, which the witness has offered, and a named assessment from either wildlife centre.
