Two people on a bench in rural Baden-Wurttemberg watched a silent dark oval rise, turn, and fly straight at them at a steady height, and got thirty-four seconds of it on a phone. The part they find most convincing is the part the camera missed, and an independent wind analysis says the object simply drifted.
What did witnesses see at Illerrieden?
On the evening of Saturday 1 August 2026, at 20:41 local time, two people sitting on a bench outside near Illerrieden in the Alb-Donau district of Baden-Württemberg, a few kilometres south of Ulm, watched a dark elongated object cross the sky above them. One of them filmed part of it on an iPhone 12. The clip runs about thirty-four seconds.
The witness account, filed through a structured sighting form rather than written as a caption, is specific about what the camera missed: "He noticed the object first. We only started recording later because we first had to realize what was happening. The initial vertical rise was not captured on video; the recording starts when it changed direction and flew towards us."
What they describe seeing is this: "The object looked elongated with an oval shape, dark matte on top and slightly reflective underneath. It slowly rose vertically, then suddenly changed direction and flew steadily towards us while keeping the same altitude. It did not wobble, change height or leave any trail. It flew very straight and came to around 30-50 meters from us."
Conditions were logged as partly cloudy with good visibility, no wind, and no sound from the object. Duration of the whole sighting was about one minute; two witnesses; one object; observer facing north; closest approach given as "within a football field," and the apparent size at arm's length as larger than a coin held at arm's length. On the five observables the reporter answered no wings, no rotors, no exhaust plume, no noise; unsure on sudden extreme acceleration; no on extreme speed; no on hard to observe; and yes on both flight without visible means of lift and movement between air, water or space.
The footage matches the description in the parts it covers. The object is a small, hard-edged, vertically elongated dark shape holding against a twilight cloud deck, with no lights, no strobe, no trail and no visible structure. It stays compact and steady across the clip as the camera tracks it. What the footage does not show, because the camera was not running yet, is the vertical rise and the direction change, which are the two elements the witness treats as decisive.

What is the official explanation?
There is no official narrative. No German authority has commented, no aviation body has published a report, and there is no Airprox-equivalent filing. The case exists as a civilian report with an unusually complete metadata trail and nothing institutional attached to it.
The provenance chain is worth stating precisely, because it is better than the norm for a viral clip and worse than a documented investigation. The report was filed through the structured form at ufosighting.report by the reporter, who then confirmed the submission from their own Reddit account through a one-time link, so the submitting identity is tied to the account u/MutedHuckleberry6821. An automated account, u/ufosightingsbot, posted it to r/UFOs on the reporter's behalf at 14:44 UTC on 2 August 2026, about eighteen hours after the sighting. The published GPS coordinates, 48.24 north and 10.01 east, are stated by the platform itself to have been randomized to within about five kilometres at the reporter's request. The location on this page is therefore approximate by design, not by inference, and the map pin should not be read as the bench they were sitting on.
The report also carries automatically generated sky context for that minute and place, which is the sort of thing normally missing from these cases: no bright satellites were computed to be visible overhead at the time, with links to ADS-B Exchange historical playback for aircraft over that spot at 18:41 UTC and to a sky chart for the date.
What did the witnesses think it was?
The reporter's own reasoning against the obvious explanations is on the record and deserves quoting rather than summarising, because it is the part a debunk has to answer: "It was too quiet to be a drone, and the shape did not match one either. The flight direction and movement did not seem consistent with a balloon. It stayed extremely stable the whole time, without wobbling or moving side to side. It only rose once at the beginning and then flew steadily towards us while maintaining the same altitude. It was directly above us, and we could not see any string or attachment. The shape also did not look like a typical balloon."
The account closes by asking for help rather than asserting a conclusion: "If anyone has an idea what it could have been, I would appreciate any suggestions, as I personally rule out a balloon due to the sudden direction change and steady movement."
A counter-case arrived within a day, and it is the most useful thing in the thread. A commenter, u/Important_Peach_2375, ran a photogrammetry and weather overlay of the clip and published it to YouTube as "Germany sighting aug 1st phodar analysis" under the channel CCHRISTIANSON. Their stated finding is that if the reported location, time and viewing direction are correct, the object is travelling in generally the same direction as the wind at that elevation. That is a direct, method-shown challenge to the single claim the witness leans on hardest, and it belongs in the case at the same weight as the testimony.
Other commenters pushed the same way without the analysis. One wrote that it displayed no extraordinary characteristics and that the reflective underside could simply be twilight lighting and viewing geometry. Another judged it a balloon on movement alone. The thread was not credulous.

Pass one, how could this be mundane. A balloon is the strongest candidate and the independent wind analysis is what elevates it above a guess. If the object was drifting with the wind at its altitude, then the steadiness the witness reads as controlled flight is exactly what a balloon in smooth air does, and the "flew steadily towards us" impression is what a wind-borne object approaching an observer looks like from directly underneath. The witness reported no wind, but surface calm at twilight is entirely compatible with a usable breeze a few hundred metres up, which is precisely the discrepancy the analysis exploits. The absence of a visible string means little at that distance in failing light against cloud.
The vertical rise is the one element the wind reading has to work harder on, and it is also the one element the camera did not capture. It survives only as memory, recalled after the fact by two people who had not yet understood what they were watching. That is the weakest link in the case and it should be said plainly: the strongest piece of evidence for something anomalous here is the part with no footage.
A drone is a weaker candidate than usual. The reported silence at a claimed 30 to 50 metres, the absence of rotors or lights in the footage, and the shape all argue against a quadcopter, though a fixed-wing or lighter-than-air drone at greater true distance than the witness estimated would answer most of it. Distance estimates by untrained observers against a featureless sky are unreliable in both directions, and a small object judged to be 40 metres away can be a large object several hundred metres away.
Pass two, if the wind reading is wrong. The analysis is conditional and says so: it holds "if the reported location/time and viewing direction are correct." The published coordinates are deliberately randomized by up to five kilometres, which introduces real slack into a wind-direction argument that depends on viewing geometry. If the object did rise vertically and then hold a straight, level, silent track against or across the wind at constant altitude with no visible means of lift, that is not a balloon, and the honest description of it is an unidentified object.
